('You base football player!')

This is today’s anchor briefing.

When King Lear’s loyal earl, Kent, taunts and kicks Goneril’s rude servant, Oswald, he says,

“You base football player!”

This takes place in Act I Scene IV of Shakespeare’s tragedy “King Lear.”

Back then, football or playing ball had a derogatory meaning.

* derogatory: 경멸하는

The truth was that football wasn’t so much the “beautiful” game that most people love today but more of a “deadly” game in Europe.

“During the 11th century, British laborers were kicking around the skulls of dead Danish soldiers in an ancient war tomb.”
“Cultural Dimensions of Play, Games, and Sport“ (1986)

Maybe it was because the sport started off by kicking the enemies’ skulls out of revenge…

* skull: 두개골

Early football had neither regulations nor rules and was merely a battle of biting, poking and kicking the other team…

It was a warlike sport.

According to historical records, from 1314 to 1876, there were 42 cases of football being banned in Great Britain due to numerous injuries and deaths.

It would have been weird if football was thought of as something positive.

However, football did not stop there.

Like the famous quote, “a ball is round,” anything is possible during a match. Thus, football has no bias towards either team or any player. It is a fair sport to everyone, regardless of their social rank or class.

Those who wanted to preserve the sport have made football a world-class sport by getting rid of its dangerous, rough aspects and by creating rules appropriate for a civilized society.

The preliminary rounds for this year’s World Cup have just begun. Korea’s first preliminary round just kicked off.

The public’s interest in the national football team has dwindled.

* dwindle: 줄어들다.

However, the players have responded with self-determination.

“I will not have any regrets in myself. “ – Midfielder Koo Ja-cheol

“No player is greater than his team.” - Defender Yun Young-sun

This is the very reason that football has progressed from being a “base sport” during the Shakespearean era to a beloved sport.

Football has become a beautiful game that brings people together from all over the world.

I will end today’s anchor briefing with a footnote.

* footnote: 각주

That is all for today’s anchor briefing.

Here is an extra thought for today’s anchor briefing.

extra thought: 사족

Whether we have won….

or lost…

Since sports have a way of changing people’s hearts, we hope that this event can bring us together and help us progress as a nation.
