Leading ‘Accidental Detective’ to success : Director E.oni’s sequel is a box office smash and is on the way to surpassing the original’s ticket sales

Starring Kwon Sang-woo and Sung Dong-il, the film knocked the record-breaking “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” off the top of the box office in its first weekend and continued to hold on to the top spot this past weekend.
The sequel to 2015’s “The Accidental Detective,” directed by Kim Joung-hoon, again tells the story of homicide detective No Tae-su (Sung) and comic book store keeper Kang Dae-man (Kwon).
This time, No and Kang are working together as investigators for their own private investigation company. Initially, the two seem to be living their dreams, but the bliss doesn’t last for long. What starts out as a grand dream turns out to be rather boring and dull.
As their income directly relates with finding prospective clients, the two do everything that they can to find cases that have been rejected by the police.
Thanks to their efforts, they are met with a puzzling case they deem worth of their full attention.
Joined by Yeo-chi (Lee Kwang-soo), a skilled former employee of the government’s Cyber Bureau, the three work together to crack the case, which quickly turns out to be a horrific serial murder case.
Motivated by the 50 million won ($45,007) compensation they are set to receive from their client, the private investigators work tirelessly to catch the culprit, but it doesn’t take them a long time to figure out that the case is rather complicated.
In just five days, the film managed to sell an impressive one million tickets. According to the Korean Film Council on June 24, the total number of viewers surpassed two million and the sequel is set to surpass the original, which sold a total of 2,625,686 tickets in 2015.
“I was able to find a [capable] director who was able to lead the set and guide the cast,” said Chung Jong-hoon, the CEO of Cree Pictures, the distributor of the film.
So what is the key to the follow-up’s success at the box office? To find out, the JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, met with Rhie and discussed her approach to the movie.
The following are edited excerpts of the interview.
In “Accidental Detective 2,” No Tae-su (Sung Dong-il) and Kang Dae-man (Kwon Sang-woo) solve crimes together once again. [CREE PICTURES]
A. It seemed that Kwon and Sung were actually Dae-man and Tae-su. Even when they were eating, there was a perfect synchronization between the two actors and their characters. When you exclude the dialogue that was necessary for the plot, 80% of their lines were ad-libbed.
Did you have to shoot many takes?
Not really. One thing that I was concerned about was the portrayal of the character Choi Seung-bok (Kwon Hyuk-ju), who has Down’s syndrome. I was worried that both the character and the actor would get mocked, so I made sure to edit carefully up until the last minute.
The new character Yeo-chi left an impression with his humor and his love of his motorcycle. Was that originally part of the script?
Actually, I told Lee that he didn’t need to be funny on purpose. But, since the atmosphere on set was so lively, it was natural for Lee to be comical.
While filming, did you make any changes to the plot to make it more interesting?
For this movie, I had to put a lot of focus on the main characters. It was hard for me to [think in their shoes] so I couldn’t make really big changes. But one change that I made was regarding the mysterious character that Son Dam-bi plays. Originally, I thought of having a male play that character, but I thought ‘Why not have a female [play the character] instead?’
Did you have any regrets about the film?
Well, I do regret not being able to portray Son’s character to its fullest.
Compared to the original film, the sequel has more scenes with No and Kang spending time with their wives and children. Was there a reason why you included the characters interacting with their families?
In the original film, I personally enjoyed when No and Kang were spending time with their families. Those scenes were [extremely] humorous. Originally, actor Lee Il-hwa, [who plays the wife of No Tae-su] made only a brief guest appearance and was not part of the main cast. [By putting more emphasis on the family,] she was able to become part of the main cast. I hope that the audience can easily connect to the families of No and Kang.
The ending of the film was hilarious. Was that a teaser for another “Accidental Detective” film?
Well, I do have another script that I have been working on for the past three years with Cree Pictures. It all depends on how well the film does at the box office. Maybe, that [script] will become a totally different film, like this one (laughs).

권상우‧성동일, 평소 밥 먹을 때도 아저씨 탐정 그대로죠
“대만(권상우 분)이나 태수(성동일 분)는 이미 1편에 있던 인물이잖아요. 저는 단지 친해질 뿐이지 바꾸면 안 된다고 생각했어요. 옆집 아저씨들과 친해진다는 느낌으로 캐릭터를 추리하며 다가갔죠.”
코믹 추리극 ‘탐정:리턴즈’의 이언희(42) 감독 말이다. 3년 만에 2편으로 돌아온 아저씨 탐정 콤비는 할리우드산 공룡(‘쥬라기 월드:폴른 킹덤’)의 독주를 막아내며 주말 극장가 1위로 데뷔했다. 13일 개봉해 닷새 동안 관객 수가 100만 명. 코미디 영화론 지난해 780만 흥행작 ‘공조’와 같은 속도다. 전편 ‘탐정:더 비기닝’(감독 김정훈)부터 다져진 권상우‧성동일의 호흡에, 천재 해커 여치 역으로 합류한 이광수가 특유의 허당기로 웃음을 더한다.
코미디 장르 경험보단 “안정적으로 현장을 이끌며 같이 잘 놀 수 있는 감독을 찾았다”는 게 제작사 크리픽쳐스 정종훈 대표의 말. 영화계에 갓 입문한 무렵 서로 만나 올해로 13년 지기다. 이언희 감독에 대한 그의 안목은 영화에서 대목 대목 입증된다.
이번 2편에서 대만은 만화방, 태수는 경찰 일을 그만두고 본격적으로 탐정사무소를 개업한다. 약혼자(오희준 분)를 찾는 가난한 임산부(정연주 분)의 의뢰가 조직범죄의 배후로 이어진다. 감자밭을 캐다 무령왕릉을 만난 격. 추리과정이 제법 허를 찌른다. 이언희 감독은 자신도 대만 못지않은 셜록 덕후라고 털어놨다. 어릴 적 『셜록홈즈』 전집을 닳도록 읽었다.
군데군데 허점을 덮는 건 일상친화적인 생활밀착형 캐릭터. 여느 범죄물에서 봤을 법한 상황도 아내 미숙(이일화 분)에게 꽉 잡혀 사는 ‘딸 바보’ 태수, 아기 띠를 맨 채 종횡무진하는 초보 아빠 대만의 캐릭터 덕에 새삼 친근하게 와 닿는다.
“권상우‧성동일 배우는 평상시 밥 먹을 때도 대만 같고, 태수 같다”는 게 감독의 귀띔. 권상우도 “이번 영화에서 맘에 안 들었던 건 후덕해진 제 얼굴”이라 농담하며 “한국 나이로 마흔셋 먹은 한 가정의 아빠고, 남편인 제가 숨김없이, 재밌게 드러났다”고 말했다. 이언희 감독은 “시나리오 맥락상 체크해야 하는 대사를 빼면 80%가 애드리브였다”면서 “전날 술자리부터 사실상 리허설을 시작해 촬영 땐 테이크도 많이 안 갔다”고 돌이켰다.
큰 웃음을 선사하는 건 여치 역의 이광수다. 화려한 의상에 할리 데이비드슨 오토바이를 타는 여치는 어둡고 폐쇄적인 기존 해커 이미지완 딴판이다. 위기상황에서 “숨으려도 숨겨지지 않는” 장신의 그가 손도끼 든 살벌한 악당들을 장난감 같은 장비로 물리치는 모습은 다소 경직된 한국 장르영화에 던지는 경쾌한 도발처럼도 다가온다. “‘미씽:사라진 여자’(2016, 이하 '미씽')을 끝내고 지쳐있던 시기에 그가 나온 웹드라마 ‘마음의 소리’를 보며 안정을 찾았다”는 이언희 감독의 사심 캐스팅이다.
“광수씨랑 첫 미팅에서 제가 여치는 굳이 웃기려고 하지 않았으면 좋겠다고 그랬거든요. 진심으로 멋있게 연출하려고 분장실장님께 ‘월드워Z’(2013) 브래드 피트 헤어스타일도 부탁했어요.” 그런데 현장 분위기가 즐겁다 보니 찍으면 찍을수록 어째 웃겨졌다는 얘기였다. 회상하던 이언희 감독의 표정이 그때로 돌아간 듯 웃음기가 번졌다.
물론 밤잠 설칠 만큼 고민한 요소도 있었다. 사건의 진상에 다가서는 과정에서 의외의 인물로 다운증후군 소년이 등장하는 장면이다. 전개상 필요했지만, 혹여 희화화로 비칠까 봐 마지막까지 편집을 조율했다. 실제 다운증후군을 앓는 권혁주 군이 연기했다. ‘카운트다운’(2011) ‘채비’(2017)에도 출연하며 연기자의 꿈을 키워온 그를 응원하는 마음도 있었다.
‘미씽’ 이후 차기작이란 책임감도 있었다. 워킹맘(엄지원 분)의 아이 실종사건을 다룬 사회파 스릴러 ‘미씽’은 지난해 부산국제영화제에서 문재인 대통령이 보며 여성 이슈를 재점화했다. 이언희 감독은 “이번 영화는 주인공의 입장에 집중해야 하다 보니 큰 변화를 만들긴 어려웠다. 각색하며 자괴감에 빠졌다”면서도 “손담비씨 역할을 남자에서 여자로 바꿨다”며 말을 이었다. “일부러 찾은 게 아니라, 보였어요. 이 역할이 여자가 아니란 게 저는 이상했거든요. 남자일 땐 아무 역할 없이 묻히는 캐릭터여서요. 영화적으로 좀 더 만족스럽게 풀어내지 못해 아쉬움은 남습니다.”
극 중 목적달성을 위해 자신이 가진 모든 것을 활용하는 여성 캐릭터에 대해선 “‘미투’ 흐름에 악용되지 않을까 며칠 동안 고민했지만, 피해가고 싶지 않았다”고 했다. “그래도 이 캐릭터에 대해 조심스러워하는 주위 목소리를 들으면서 분위기가 많이 달라졌다고 생각했어요. ‘미씽’ 때 제가 그런 얘길 하면 아무도 상대를 안 해줬거든요. 적어도 인식하게 됐다는 거니까요.”
탐정 콤비가 전면에 나선 1편보다 아내와 아이들의 모습이 입체적이어서 좋았다고 하자, 그가 반색했다. “‘탐정:더 비기닝’에서 개인적으론 주인공 가족들 얘기가 재밌었어요. 이일화 선배님은 원래 특별출연이었는데 2편에선 이름도 얻었어요. 한 사람, 한 사람이 시리즈의 일원이 되는 과정 자체가 재밌었죠. 관객들도 이 ‘집안’과 친해지는 기분으로 영화를 봐주시면 좋겠어요.”
영화 내내 눈에 띄던 고양이 실종 전단지는 3편 에피소드로 이어질까. 열여섯 살 된 고양이를 키운다는 이언희 감독이 슬쩍 눈을 반짝이며 응수했다. “크리픽쳐스와 3년 가까이 함께 준비하던 다른 시나리오도 있어요. 이번 흥행성적에 따라 차기작이 정해질 것 같아요. 어쩌면 또 완전히 다른 영화가 될 수도 있겠지요. 이번 영화처럼요(웃음).”
