Business leaders meet in Beijing

Top executives from major companies as well as former government officials from Korea and China are gathering in Beijing to discuss measures to enhance bilateral economic cooperation.

The meeting is based on an accord at the end of last year between the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and its Chinese counterpart, the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, to step up communication and support economic exchanges between the two countries.

The gathering isn’t intended as a one-time event and the organizers hope it will develop into a “meaningful economic cooperation channel.”

If necessary, the group of businessmen will make business-related proposals to each of their governments, according to the KCCI on Tuesday.

“We took into account business relevance to China when selecting the members,” said a KCCI spokesman. “Members from China will be unveiled later.”

Representatives from the Korean business community are: KCCI Chairman Park Yong-maan; SK Chairman Choi Tae-won; Samsung Vice Chairman Yoon Boo-keun; Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Chung Eui-sun; LG Vice Chairman Koo Bon-joon; Hanwha Chairman Kim Seung-youn; Doosan Chairman Park Jeong-won; CJ Chairman Sohn Kyung-shik, LS Chairman Koo Ja-yeol; Shinhan Financial Group Chairman Cho Young-byoung; and Amorepacific Chairman Suh Kyung-bae.

Three former government officials who used to be engaged in economic and trade policies as well as an economic policy expert are also part of the delegation.

Park Jin-soo, vice chairman of LG Chem, will be attending the initial meeting on behalf of Vice Chairman Koo, and Kim Chang-bum, vice chairman of Hanwha, will do so for Chairman Kim.
