“The Three Kims Quiz”
최양락-배칠수 콤비가 진행한 라디오 시사 콩트였습니다.
There used to be an act on “Choi Yang-rak’s Interesting Radio,” a talk show hosted by Choi Yang-rak and DJ Bae Chil-soo, where Bae would impersonate the Three Kims (Kim Dae-jung, Kim Young-sam and Kim Jong-pil), who shaped South Korea’s political landscape for decades, and answer questions from Choi in character.
* impersonate: (음성[말투, 태도])을 흉내 내다
땡~ 소리가 나면 역정마저 내며 아쉬워하던 3김과 당황하는 사회자의 말투는 모두를 유쾌하게 만들었습니다.
Whenever they got a question wrong, the Three Kims would groan deeply, the host would get flustered and the audience would laugh.

자신들을 희화화한 코너였지만 당사자들도 싫지만은 않았던 것 같습니다.
Although the act made fun of the Three Kims, it seemed like they didn’t mind being satirized.

이게 벌써 2007년 2월의 일이었으니 당시만 해도 뭐랄까…
This was in February 2007.
기분 좋은 낭만이 존재하던 시대였다고나 할까…
It was a famously romantic era in Korean politics.

DJ, YS, JP — Kim Dae-jung, Kim Young-sam, Kim Jong-pil
이름의 약자만으로도 통칭되는 3김의 시대는 그렇게 오랜 시간 그 권위를 강고하게 하기도 하고, 조금씩 허물어 가기도 하면서 한국의 정치사 속에서 생명력을 유지했습니다.
These three politicians, so influential that they could be easily identified by their initials, were able to maintain power for a long time. As the years passed, their authority would slowly dwindle, but they still maintained their vitality.
*dwindle: 점점 줄어들다
두 사람은 차례로 대통령이 되었고, 한 사람은 5.16쿠데타로 시작해 유신의 시대를 거쳐 일선에서 물러날 때까지 2인자의 역할을 담당했지요.
While Kim Dae-jung and Kim Young-sam later became presidents, Kim Jong-pil remained the “ perennial No. 2” for helping bring political figures to power but never reaching the pinnacle himself. Kim Jong-pil was well-known for being the architect of the military coup that installed Park Chung Hee as president.

마지막 한 사람이 떠나감으로써…이미 오래전 정치적으로 막을 내렸던 3김의 시대는 존재의 관점에서도 비로소 역사에 종언을 고하게 되었습니다.
This week, the last of the Three Kims, Kim Jong-pil, died of old age. It officially marked the end of an era. Although he held no significant power by the time of his death, Kim Jong-pil’s passing still delivered an important message.
이미 세상은 변해서 지역주의와 보스 파벌정치는 물론 반공과 분단의 이데올로기마저 조금씩 삭아가고 있는 시기.
The world has already changed so much. Regionalism, factional politics, anticommunism and ideological division are slowly eroding.
*regionalism: 지역주의 *factional politics: 보스 파벌정치 *anti-communism: 반공 *ideological division: 분단의 이데올리기 *erode: (서서히) 약화시키다
세상은 우리가 지나온 3김의 시대를 부정하려는 것이 아니라 이제는 소수의 정치지도자에게 의존했던 3김의 시대에서 벗어나 시민이 권력을 만들고 감시하는 시민의 시대를 꿈꾸고자 하는 것은 아닐까.
The world is not trying to deny the Three Kims their legacy, but now, rather than heavily relying on a few political leaders, we are trying to create a new era where citizens can exercise their own rights.
다시 추억의 3김 퀴즈로 돌아가 보겠습니다.
Let us return to that radio act, the Three Kims Quiz.
목청을 높여 '어이, 사회자 정답'을 외치던 정치 9단들.
The skilled politicians would shout, “Hey, Mr. Host, I have the answer!”
그러나 모두를 유쾌하게 때론 통쾌하게 만들어주었던 그 퀴즈를 시원하게 맞춰낸 3김은 없었습니다.
But really, the characters never gave proper answers. Instead, they would entertain the audience with incorrect responses.
다만 딱 하루. 김대중 전 대통령 서거 다음 날에 사회자 최양락 씨는 이렇게 말했습니다.
But after the death of Kim Dae-jung, the host said that day…
"오늘은 땡이 아니라 딩동댕을 쳐 드리고 싶습니다"
“Today, instead of marking the answer wrong, I want to mark it right.”
그리고 아마도 그 딩동댕은 그 보다 몇 해 전에 있었던 저와의 인터뷰에서 DJ가 했던 바로 그 대답에 대한 정답처리가 아니었을까…
And that correct answer — democracy — was one that Kim Dae-jung gave me during an interview a few years ago.
