Who says furniture can only be seen in showrooms or in stores? Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art suggests that furniture pieces can be juxtaposed alongside fine art paintings and sculptures in its new exhibit “Art in Life.”

In collaboration with Ace Avenue, a collective furniture shop selling Italian furniture, the art museum in Gyeonggi has brought sofas, tables, chairs, mirrors and other pieces of home furniture as part of the exhibit. Just like some paintings or sculptures become a part of one’s life when they are displayed and placed in a home, the art museum believes that well-designed furniture with practical functions fit well with fine art.

In Korea, it is considered shocking for a museum to put fine art alongside commercial items that are normally in stores. Works by six artists including Bae Mi-kyung are displayed together with furniture to show adventurous visitors how artists can think outside of the box and suggest how furniture can be another piece of art in the home. Ace Avenue brought in pieces from furniture companies Arflex, Baxter, Riva 1920, Porada, Fiam Italia and Kristalia.

“These days, furniture is more than just an item, so we wanted to show that it can be something artsy that suggests a certain lifestyle and culture,” said Kwon Eun-suk, an executive of Ace Avenue. “Italian furniture makers have been making masterpieces with designs that show off a classical style or with old-school hand-made production.

Porada’s wood table is placed right in front of artist Bang Hai-ja’s painting of blue and brownish stripes which one could interpret as a cut surface of wood (pictured above). Bang is known as an artist of lights for expressing light through different colors, and another piece of her work is displayed close to a leather sofa, considered a signature item from Baxter. It uses buttons to adjust the leather’s softness.

Fiam Italia’s mirror and Riva 1920’s console look like pieces of sculpture, as both have turned common objects into something different. Vittorio Livi, who established Fiam Italia in 1972, has thought that glass can be the main ingredient and the star in furniture-making, and that has been his motto when it comes to making new items. Riva 1920’s console is made with wood found from deep in the sea to show how the walls between nature and man-made art and design can be torn down.

What keeps the balance in this exhibition are works by six different artists who have focused on making their mark in the art world. Kang Hyung-koo, who has been working on portraits for nearly 40 years, has pieces placed next to minimally-designed furniture to make them stand out. Paintings by Park Seung-soon bring bold energy into the gallery with her use of color. So Jin-sook, who usually works in Sweden, displays sculptures made with metal items to add diversity to the exhibition.

“We wanted to show a different aspect of art, which is a part of everyday people’s lives through this exhibition,” said Park Sun-joo, a managing director for Yeongeun Museum of Contemporary Art.

“Art that is a part of people’s lives fulfils people’s spirits. We want visitors to get to enjoy art that exists in many different forms in our lives.”
