Every year, villages around the country enter the Making a Happy Village Contest, a competition that honors villages that have shown unity and cooperation in making their community a better place. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Korea Rural Community Corporation work together to host the contest and identify villages across the country making positive changes. Last year, two villages stood out - Soomi Village in Yangpyeong County, Gyeonggi, and Deoku Village in Jeongseon County, Gangwon.

A festival for every season

Soomi Village in Yangpyeong County, Gyeonggi, won the bronze medal for Profit and Experience at last year’s Making a Happy Village Contest. This was made possible thanks to the village’s lineup of festivals and events, planned and carried out by the residents themselves. Every summer, the Catfish Mustache Festival is held in Soomi Village. Visitors ranging from grade school students to couples in their 20s and middle-aged travelers travel just to take part in the event.

The village, located south of Mount Yongmun, sits next to Heuk Creek, a tributary of Namhan River. It is also a farming area filled with rice, potato and corn fields.

The name of the village, Soomi, comes from Soo, meaning water, and mi, which means rice. The words were put together to show that the water is clear and the rice is plentiful in the area. “We contemplated the [name] that would best please both the natives who have lived here for a long time and those who have returned back home,” said village representative Choi Seong-jun. He added, “We came up with the concept in a way that [would make the village more appealing to] city people.”

The village became the host of more and more festivals beginning in 2007. Every spring, there is a strawberry-picking festival. In the summer, there is the Catfish Mustache Festival. While in the fall, the village hosts a roasting festival. And every winter, Soomi Village holds its own Ice Fishing Festival. There isn’t a single season that passes without a festival. While many farmland villages are visited by groups of young students from schools, Soomi Village is visited by many families and couples.

In 2010, Soomi Village welcomed over 10,000 visitors for the first time and has had a significant increase in the number every year since. Last year, the village saw 70,000 visitors and recorded 230 million won ($202,611) in sales. Every year, the farming association cooperation of Soomi Village sets aside 50 million won to be used for distribution among the members, the organization of the village, the village’s welfare fund and more. This also may explain why the community remains so clean.

With summer in full swing, the village is filled with busy residents. Kids divided into small groups make steamed buns, and others ride wooden rafts that take them down Heuk Creek.

The highlight of the Catfish Mustache Festival is catching catfish. Kids gather into an artificial pond made under the shade of an overgrown chestnut tree and try to catch catfish with their hands. Preschoolers can also participate by trying their hand at catching baby catfish that they can take home if they want.

Adult catfish are available to catch in Heuk Creek, and there is a place where right away people can cook the fish they have caught.

Children covered in mud from catching catfish can head over to Heuk Creek to pick mulberries or play rolling hoops.

“In the quiet countryside, just hearing children laugh makes you happy. For a resident who has only been doing farm work, it’s nice to see people enjoying themselves,” said Lee Heon-gi, the chairman of the Soomi Village advisory committee.

High up in the mountains

In Jeongseon County, Gangwon, there is a mountain village with a view as beautiful as the Swiss Alps. This is Deoku Village, which won the silver medal for Scenery and Environment at last year’s Making a Happy Village Contest. Many people in Jeongseon County were not even familiar with Deoku Village until the spring of 2015, when the village was featured in an episode of tvN’s reality program “Three Meals a Day” and became where celebrity couple Won Bin and Lee Na-young had their wedding photoshoot and ceremony. Before then, there weren’t many visitors coming to the area because it was high up in the mountains.

Deoku Village is made up of three smaller villages - Daechon, Deoksangi and Baekodam. Among them, Daechon is the largest. Out of 136 people living in Deoku Village, more than 50 live in Daechon. Additionally, most of the locations featured on television were places in Daechon.

The village is surrounded by mountain peaks mixed with a cornfield and farmhouses. In every direction, the scenery looks like a beautiful image on a postcard or a folding screen spread wide open.

There is also a sign stationed in the village that points to the location where actors Won Bin and Lee Na-young got married. “From what I know, Won Bin, whose hometown is Jeongseon [County], chose this area after searching for a place where artificial structures were nowhere to be seen,” said Jeon Sang-geol, the village foreman.

In between the mountains and Deoku Village is a long stream known as Eo Creek. This creek has stepping stones that allow people to cross. But after it rains, the stream gets flooded, making it difficult for people to cross. Some villagers voiced the need for a strong bridge to be built over the creek, but Jeon, head of the village, and many of the villagers refused.

“A bridge or a facility can be fixed or rebuilt anytime. However, once nature is messed with, there is no going back. This is why we bear the inconvenience - for the scenery that the village has long maintained,” said Jeon.

Baekodam, located next to Daechon, has recently opened up as an experience center. Since 2016, the building of the former Jeongdeok Branch School has not only been used as a place for accommodation but also as a museum of sorts that offers various experience programs.

One of the programs teaches students how to catch trout bare-handed. An inflatable pool is filled with water and trout outside of the building, and children who are up for the challenge jump right in. After making a catch, they get to enjoy fried trout cooked by the village residents and play football in the schoolyard.
