최단 기간 유니콘 된 버드, 한국서 창업했더라면
버드(Bird)라는 스타트업 때문에 미국이 시끌시끌하다. 지난해 4월 창업해 그해 9월 서비스를 시작한 버드는 현재 시장 가치가 20억 달러(약 2조2300억원)를 넘었다. 역사상 가장 짧은 기간에 유니콘 기업(기업 가치가 1조원이 넘는 스타트업)에 등극한 기록을 세웠다. 가장 최근인 지난달 말까지 유치한 투자를 다 합하면 4억 달러(약 4500억원)다.

버드는 전동스쿠터 공유 서비스를 한다. 스쿠터는 애플리케이션(앱)으로 위치 추적을 통해 자신과 가까운 곳에서 빌릴 수 있다. 앱과 서비스는 편리하지만 스쿠터 자체는 엄청나게 혁신적인 제품은 아니다. 그냥 중국 샤오미가 만든 가성비 좋은 제품이다.
버드 최고경영자(CEO) 트래비스 반더잔덴은 버드를 ‘라스트-마일(Last-Mile)’ 공유 서비스 회사라 부른다. 지하철·버스 등으로 연결되지 않는 ‘마지막 교통 실핏줄’을 잇는 공해 없는 교통수단을 자처한다. 미국 전문가들은 차량 공유가 ‘마이크로 모빌리티’(초소형 교통수단)로 확장하고 있어 이런 회사에 관심이 쏠리는 것이라고 해석한다.
버드의 등장으로 새로운 직업도 생겼다. 고객이 이용한 후 방전돼 도로에 방치된 스쿠터를 매일 수거하고 충전해 제 자리에 갖다 놓고 회사에서 돈을 받는 ‘차저’(충전해 주는 사람)들이다.
버드가 한국에서 태어났으면 어땠을까. ①버드는 투자받은 돈을 광고를 비롯한 대대적인 마케팅에 쓴다. ②스쿠터 숫자와 서비스 지역을 단기간 최대한 늘리는 데 집중한다. ③이용자들이 다 쓰고 방치한 스쿠터가 도시에 큰 불편을 끼친다. ④정부가 버드의 영업을 금지하거나 스쿠터 숫자를 규제한다. ⑤사업 모델이 좌초된 버드는 구조조정에 돌입한다. 대충 이렇게 굴러가지 않았을까.
반면, 미국 상황은 이렇다. 버드가 태어난 도시인 캘리포니아 샌타모니카 시의회는 전동스쿠터 수를 제한하는 법령을 검토했다. 하지만 토론 결과 오히려 ‘급증하는 수요에 맞춰 스쿠터 수 제한을 신축적으로 하겠다’는 법안을 통과시킨다.
버드도 빅데이터를 분석해 스쿠터 한 대당 최소 하루 세 번씩 이용되지 않을 경우 스쿠터 수를 쓸데없이 늘리지 않겠다고 했다. 스쿠터를 수거하고 충전하는 사람인 차저를 늘리고, 스쿠터 한 대당 1달러를 해당 도시에 교통 인프라 개선 비용으로 기증한다는 계획도 내놨다.
버드가 계속 유니콘 기업으로 머물지 아니면 몇 년 뒤 무너질지 아직 알 수 없다. 분명한 것은 미국 정부ㆍ스타트업ㆍ지방자치단체ㆍ소비자들이 머리를 맞대고 현 상황을 바꿔 나가는 노력이 끊임없이 시도되고 있다는 사실이다. 개선 논의 자체가 막혀 있는 한국의 모빌리티 서비스와는 다른 그림이다.
