유튜브와 ‘디지털 소확행’
요즘 급성장하는 유튜브 채널 하나가 눈에 띈다. 7마리 고양이와 ‘집사’(애묘인들은 스스로를 도도한 고양이의 시중을 드는 ‘집사’라고 칭한다)의 소소한 일상을 보여주는 ‘크림히어로즈’다./ 지난달 유튜브가 올해 신규 구독자 수가 가장 많은 한국 채널들을 발표했을 때, 케이팝/어린이 제외 부문 20선에 동물 콘텐트로서 유일하게 포함됐다.
‘크림히어로즈’는 현재 구독자 수가 140만 명이 넘고, 한번 동영상이 올라올 때마다 수천 개의 댓글이 달린다. 영어 댓글을 비롯한 외국인의 댓글도 적지 않다. 그런데 내용은 지극히 평범하고 소박한 일상이다. 발톱 깎기 싫어하는 고양이와 집사의 대결, 고양이 장난감을 조립하는 집사와 그걸 방해하거나 즐기는 고양이들…. 이걸 왜 보나 싶으면서도 어느새 중독되어 다음 동영상을 클릭하고 있는 나 자신을 발견하게 된다.

이 채널의 매력은 무심하고 편안하면서 심심하지 않다는 것이다. 기획자인 집사는 절대 얼굴을 드러내지 않아서, 시청자들이 외모와 성격이 제각각인 7마리 고양이에 집중하게 되고, 인간을 대면할 때 느끼는 피곤함을 덜게 된다. 그러면서 집사는 고양이들이 다양한 행동을 보여줄 상황을 자연스럽게 유도하고 유머를 발휘해 동영상이 지루하지 않게 한다. 미술사학자 고유섭의 ‘무기교의 기교’라는 말이 어울릴 정도다.
‘크림히어로즈’의 폭발적인 인기는 ‘소확행(小確幸)’ 즉 ‘작고 확실한 행복’을 찾는 요즘의 트렌드와 맞물려있다. 무라카미 하루키가 처음 소확행이라는 말을 쓰며 언급한 게 “겨울 밤 부스럭 소리를 내며 이불 속으로 들어오는 고양이”다. 실제 고양이를 기를 시간과 여유가 없는 이들이 동영상 속 고양이를 눈으로 쓰다듬으며 ‘디지털 소확행’을 즐기는 것이다. 그러고 보면 급성장 유튜브 20선에 여러 개 오른 ‘먹방’ 채널도 디지털 소확행을 위한 것이 아닌가.
실생활에서 소확행조차 즐길 여유가 없는 현대인들이 디지털 소확행을 즐기면서 유튜브의 소박한 생활 채널들이 요즘 대세가 되고 있다. 그런데 이들에게 어필하고자 하는 유튜브 스타들은 겉보기에는 자신들의 소확행을 무심히 드러내는 것 같지만, 정교한 전략과 하루 온종일의 노력으로 콘텐트를 만든다. 먹방 스타 ‘밴쯔’는 먹지 않는 시간에 7~8시간 운동을 한다고 하고, ‘크림히어로즈’의 자연스러운 화면에는 ‘무기교의 기교’를 위한 고도의 기획과 촬영과 편집이 있다. ‘디지털 소확행’의 시대는 모두가 참 힘들게 사는 시대인지도 모르겠다.
