Cabinet approves shorter conscription period
President Moon Jae-in’s cabinet approved a proposal on Tuesday to shorten the mandatory military service period in Korea by up to three months over the next couple of years. The reform is one of many that the Ministry of National Defense made public in May. Reducing the service period was also one of Moon’s campaign promises last year.
The plan calls for service to be gradually reduced from 21 months to 18 months in the Army; 23 months to 20 months in the Navy; and 24 months to 22 months in the Air Force.
