Jo Hyeon-woo won’t play in next 2 national team games

Goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo will not play for the national football team in a pair of September friendlies on Wednesday with a knee injury sustained during the Asian Games.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) said Jo will not dress for new head coach Paulo Bento when Korea hosts Costa Rica tomorrow and Chile next Tuesday. Jo was Korea’s No. 1 goalkeeper at the Jakarta Palembang Asian Games, which concluded on Sunday, and helped the country to a second straight gold medal.

Jo suffered an injury to the lateral meniscus in his left knee during a round of 16 match against Iran. He landed awkwardly after making a save. Jo missed the quarterfinals against Uzbekistan but returned to action for the semifinals against Vietnam and then the gold medal match against Japan.

Jo, who rose to international stardom at the FIFA World Cup in Russia in June, allowed two goals in his last two matches while playing on a tender knee.

The KFA said Song Bum-keun, who backed up Jo at the Asian Games, will replace the veteran in the lineup for the friendlies. Bento has two other goalkeepers on the roster in Kim Seung-gyu and Kim Jin-hyeon.

The two friendlies will be the first two matches with Korea for Bento, who was named the new bench boss on Aug. 17.

Korean dragon boat teams can’t unite for championship

Dragon boat athletes from the two Koreas will not be able to form a joint team at the upcoming world championships in the United States because North Korean athletes haven’t been granted visas, a report said Wednesday.

Citing officials from the International Canoe Federation (ICF), Radio Free Asia (RFA) said the unified Korean team will not be a part of the ICF Dragon Boat World Championships in Gainesville, Georgia, starting on Sept. 13.

The Koreas assembled combined teams in men’s and women’s dragon boat racing at the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia last month, and won three medals, including a gold in the women’s 500-meter event.

Ross Solly, ICF’s media and communication manager, told RFA that, following a meeting with canoe federations from both Koreas during the Asian Games, the ICF had to “reluctantly” decide to leave the joint team out of the competition.

Solly also said the ICF had also been in contact with the International Olympic Committee and relevant U.S. authorities on the issue but said time wasn’t on the ICF’s side.
