‘Burning’ selected as Korea’s Oscar choice

Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong’s drama “Burning” has been selected to contend in the foreign-language category of the Oscars, which will take place in February. The film had its premiere in May at the Cannes Film Festival.

At Cannes, the film received the Fipresci Prize, awarded by film critics, and also the Vulcan Award of the Technical Artist.

“The film’s mature aesthetics and ethical contemplation that analyze the part of the unexplored Korean society, and its potential to be recognized by the international intelligentsia were valued,” said Korean Film Council.

Starring Yoo Ah-in, Steven Yeun and Jeon Jong-seo, the movie is based off of a cryptic short story by Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami.

The adaptation into the film is fueled by the frustration and incompetence felt by a struggling young delivery man named Jong-su (Yoo), who dreams of becoming a novelist.

While on duty, Jong-su encounters an old friend named Hae-mi (Jeon) from his hometown.

They develop a budding relationship, but it abruptly ends when Hae-mi meets a mysterious man named Ben (Yeun) during a trip to Africa.
