Nature shows off its brilliance at Baekdu Daegan: Asia’s largest arboretum is home to plants and tigers

테스트

The Baekdu Daegan National Arboretum in Bonghwa County, North Gyeongsang, which opened in May, is the biggest arboretum in Asia.

The biggest arboretum in Asia sits in Korea, upon a peaceful mountain range in Bonghwa County, North Gyeongsang. The Baekdu Daegan National Arboretum opened its doors in May, stretching across an area of 15 square kilometers (3,706 acres) - twice the size of Jongno District in central Seoul. Since it opened, the arboretum has seen over 110,000 guests as of early September, despite its distance from the capital.

Inside the vast space are some 2,000 different species of plants sitting in 27 separate exhibit zones, each packed with scenery diverse enough to be called a small arboretum itself. Due to the wide range of things to see, it may not be easy for a visitor to plan their trip without knowing which of the exhibits to put on their list. The JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, visited the peaceful highlands in late August to find out which spots must not be missed. It’s recommended that visitors take a guided tour with on-site staff to make the most of their trip.

Two Siberian tigers, Hancheong and Uri, stand inside the arboretum, left. An older tiger named Duman also lives in the arboretum but is kept away from guests due to old age. A child sits in a gigantic Victoria water lily leaf, right. The water lily is big enough to float even with a person in it.

Tiger power

One thing that should not be missed at the arboretum is the fact that it is the home of an animal species you may not expect to see in a peaceful mountainside: three Siberian tigers. “Just 100 years ago, tigers roamed the forests of Baekdu Daegan [Baekdu mountain range], but went extinct [in Korea] during the Japanese Colonial Rule,” said Kim Yong-ha, head of the arboretum. “I hoped that the arboretum would house not just the flora of the Baekdu Daegan, but also the tigers that used to live in the Baekdu mountain.”

The three tigers - 17-year-old Duman, 13-year-old Hancheong and 7-year-old Uri - were adopted from Seoul Grandpark and the Korea National Arboretum, and now live on 4.8 hectares of land - seven times the size of a football field. Duman, whose age is equivalent to 85 in humans, has lost his eyesight, and is kept in a separate field far from the reach of any outsiders.

The tigers’ home is four to five times bigger than the average space they are given at zoos, but that doesn’t mean that visitors will get to see the tigers running full-speed or digging in to fresh and bloody meat. Tigers are innately nocturnal, and they are given meals just once a day in an indoor cage.

Some visitors who come expecting to see the tigers may be disappointed if they come at the wrong time of day. If you’d like to see them relatively energetic, then the best times to visit are early in the morning or in the late afternoon. Hancheong and Uri leave their indoor habitat at 9:30 a.m. and make their way back at 5 p.m. These times are when visitors can see the two walking gracefully through the scenic Baekdu mountain range.

Visitors will also see piles of stones as big as a small house throughout the arboretum. They are hosikchong, meaning the tombs for those who have been killed by a tiger. Some 160 hosikchong have been found in the Gangwon region.

Fully informed

With a total of 27 different exhibits, it is understandably difficult for visitors to choose where to go, but thankfully guided tours are available for those in need. Different tours take visitors around the arboretum centering on different themes such as “Going to the Tiger Forest,” “Wetlands Embrace Life” or “The Scented Journey Through the Arboretum.” The JoongAng Ilbo chose the wetland tour.

“The water lily blooms at night and closes its petals during the day,” said guide Park Yeong-rae. The tour featured different species of water lilies from around the world, with some 100 different flowers flaunting their beauty. The Victoria water lily is particularly eye-catching, with its leaves that can weigh up to 15 kilograms (33 pounds). They are so large that a child could sit on it as if it was a boat. The lily exhibit ends this Sunday.

The tour proceeds onto the wild plant exhibition by way of a tiger-decorated tram. Visitors can try fishing out some insects from a small pond on their way to the next stop, a highlands wetland. This natural wetland region is similar to the Dragon Swamp located at Mount Daeam in Gangwon, the first wetland in Korea to be recognized by the Ramsar Convention.

Small streams flow here and there throughout the arboretum. Ungok Stream welcomes guests at the beginning, with Dunae Stream flowing across the inner regions of the arboretum. There are also six small valleys inside.

Rock and roll

One place that most guests stop at apart from the tiger exhibit is the rock garden, where beautiful rocks of different shapes and sizes are displayed on a gentle slope, like ancient landscape paintings.

Different paths lead up to the rock garden. One starts from the mirror pond, up a wild flower hill and down the slope that overlooks the tiger forest. Another one, recommended by the staff, takes the visitors from open fields into the forest. A five-minute stroll through the forest takes visitors to an outlook, where the rock garden, wild flower hill and birch garden can all be seen.

Once you’re at the rock garden, it’s important that you take in the aesthetics of the scenery, and not just the individual rocks. The scene itself is like a piece of art work, where the trees, rocks and flowers all sit in one peaceful and sublime harmony. A closer look can open your eyes to small flowers and plants that grow in between the rocks.

“We are planning on growing plants that grow in the northern highlands, which are experiencing a sudden drop in number due to climate change,” said Park. The wild flower hill is filled with chamomile and white birch forest sitting far ahead.

“I used to be really disappointed when I went to arboretums in the capital region, especially because of the hot weather,” said Kim Jae-pil, a 64-year-old visitor from Seoul. “But here, their attention to little details and their efforts in keeping these plants really show. I especially remember the rock garden and the wild flower hill.”

The birch forest may need some time for it to fully grow, however. Some 650 young trees have been recently planted, so the forest will start to bloom in five to 10 years.

The perfect tour

Left, visitors walk through a path in the four seasons foliage exhibit. Right, free trams that are decorated like tigers run every 10 to 15 minutes in the arboretum. [JOONGANG ILBO]

The free tram runs every 10 to 15 minutes, starting from the information center in the front of the park, driving all the way into the deepest corner of the arboretum - the autumn foliage exhibit - then back to the entrance. But the tram doesn’t stop in front of every single exhibit there is. For exhibits like the tigers, the wetland and the rock garden, visitors must walk a few minutes from the tram stop to get there. Some paths may even include an uphill trek, which may not be easy for the younger or older visitors.

The autumn foliage exhibit is perhaps the most promising spot for the upcoming cool season. Many species of trees that turn color stand gracefully, dressed in hues of green, red and yellow. It will also be the best spot for photos. Another popular photo spot, especially for the visitors in their 20s, is the four seasons foliage exhibit. Flowers that bloom at different times welcome the guests throughout the year.

The seed vault is one spot where the public is not allowed. Some 3,300 species seeds are stored in a storage facility that keeps the seeds preserved throughout the year at -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit). The inventory includes rare specimens such as the Alpine-modest primrose and the East Asian edelweiss. Though it’s not accessible to guests, the arboretum boasts itself as a Noah’s Ark of plants with this building. For those interested, you can get a sneak peak of what’s inside the vault at the information center.

홈페이지(bdna.or.kr) 참조.
