Forests are great getaways but competition is hot: Korea Forest Service offers entrance on first-come-first-served basis for weekdays and through lotteries for weekends
The competition to get a booking in the country’s recreation forests is becoming fiercer each year. The most popular forest resort last summer was Mount Byeon in Buan, North Jeolla. Unlike other forest resorts, this one looks out to the sea. [KIM KYUNG-BIN]
For each summer peak season, the Korea Forest Service draws lots to select guests for all recreational forests across the country. For this year’s peak season, which was between July 15 and Aug. 24, the Korean forest management body accepted reservation requests for seven days from June 4 to 10. More than 100,000 people applied, making the average competition rate rise to as high as 6.45 to 1. The popular Mount Byeon got applications from 9,525 people, pushing its competition rate to 13.79 to 1, while 1,728 people applied to go to camping sites on Mount Daeya, making a rate of 9.93 to 1.
Based on the number of applicants, the JoongAng Sunday selected the top nine national recreational forests in Korea. Interestingly, the nine were scattered across the country in different provinces.
“We have created recreational forests considering the demand and characteristics of a specific region,” explained Kim Jae-hyun, Minister of the Korea Forest Service.
Bookings for all national recreational forest resorts can only be made through huyang.go.kr. Entrance slots are given on a first-come-first-served basis for weekdays and for weekends and public holidays, it’s a lottery.
1. Byeonsan Recreational Forest in Buan, North Jeolla
The forest resort in Mount Byeon is relatively new, having opened in 2015. It is Korea’s first forest resort located by the sea, allowing all of its rooms to have ocean views. The resort has 33 rooms in total, 23 in the Forest Culture Recreation Building and 10 in the House in the Woods. Although the service may not be five-star, the view from all the rooms is known to be better than any luxury hotel in the country. The resort also operates an outdoor swimming pool during the summer season. The most popular room at this resort is one in the House in the Woods named “Widohang.” It is the most competed for among all the rooms in the national recreational forests. Last summer, the competition rate for booking that room was 213 to 1.
The resort is located near the entrance of Byeonsanbando National Park. It is close to other tourist attractions such as the Chaeseok River and the Naeso Buddhist Temple. Following the trail from the resort down to the sea, there’s an observatory where visitors can view beautiful wetlands. The Byeonsan Masil-gil Course No. 6, a famous trekking course in Buan, also passes through this spot. Namhaepyeonbaek Recreation Forest resort in Namhae, South Gyeongsang is known for being filled with tall Hinoki Cypress trees, known as pyeonbaek in Korean. [KIM KYUNG-BIN]
This forest is known for being very woody, filled with tall Hinoki Cypress tress, known as pyeonbaek trees in Korean. Due to its beautiful scenery, the forest has been featured numerous times in films, dramas and TV commercials. The trees were planted in the 1960s and the forest resort was established in 1998. Thanks to the abundant phytoncide in the forest, which Hinoki Cypress trees are known for, the forest attracts many guests desiring to ease skin irritations or allergies.
Since the forest is located on an island, visitors may expect to enjoy both the ocean and the mountain at the same time. But once you enter the forest, the ocean view is not available. About a kilometer walk down the trail is required to see the vast southern sea. One of the most popular programs offered is the “Green Experience for Atopy in Pyeonbaek Tress.” The program includes walking in the rich woods, led by both a forest guide and a “healing guide.” The resort is located near tourist attractions including Boriam Temple atop Mount Geum as well as the German Village, which was established for Koreans who returned from Germany. Out of all the recreational forest resorts, the architecture of this resort is the most eye-catching, even bizarre. The main building is in the shape of a Geobukseon, or Turtle Ship, a type of a Korean warship that was used by the Royal Korean Navy during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), while the log cabins resemble the Panokseon, an oar-and-sail-propelled ship that was the main class of warship used in the Joseon Dynasty. Visitors could feel like they are on the set of the movie “Roaring Currents” (2014), the naval war film that was based on the historical Battle of Myeongnyang.
Although not everyone is fond of the warship-inspired accommodations, it clearly demonstrates that Jindo is the land of victory for the Battle of Myeongnyang. Various programs are unique to the region. There’s a guided tour through the pine tree filled forest, listening to the history of Korea, centering around the famous battle. There’s also a center nearby where visitors can have a go at learning sori (traditional narrative singing) in Namdo style. As the trails through the woods are well decked, elderly visitors especially enjoy visiting this forest resort. It opened its doors last year and all rooms allow a glimpse of the ocean. 4. Mount Daeya Recreational Forest in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang
Mount Daeya stands 931 meters (3,050 feet) above sea level, located inside the beautiful Songnisan National Park. The forest here is known for its beauty but its uniquely designed resort is what really attracts so many visitors. All 30 cabins look like large oak wine buckets. Since the cabins are not equipped with bedding or cooking implements, the resort is actually regarded as a camping site. But the cabins offer electricity and hot water so guests can stay without having to put up tents. Perhaps this contributed to the high competition rate for booking among camping sites last summer. 5. Mount Sinbul Waterfall Recreational Forest in Ulsan
Among 43 national recreational forests, this one is the only one with the word “waterfall” in its name. That is because it is a forest resort where visitors can enjoy the beautiful Paraeso Waterfall, which is located about 30 minutes on foot from the resort’s entrance. The water falls from a hill 15 meters above ground and the water boasts a deep-blue color. The forest is especially beautiful during autumn as Mount Sinbul (1,208 meters) shines in gold as the leaves change color. Walking about 3.3 kilometers from the resort, there’s a vast field of silver grass, making visitors fumble for their cameras for irresistible photographs.
The forest resort is divided into two sections, the upper and the lower part. Visitors can reach the lower section of the resort using a car, but to access the upper section, they should walk 2.3 kilometers. The resort is notorious for being inconvenient, but still the rooms get fully booked especially during the autumn. Once a day, the resort offers a porter service carrying heavy luggage up to the upper section. 6. Mount Cheongok Recreational Forest in Bonghwa, North Gyeongsang
Among Korea’s avid campers, this forest resort is known to be five-star. It has the largest camping site of all national recreational forests. There are 142 camping zones with six cabins, 106 auto camping zones, 24 deck zones and five open field zones. Some zones offer electricity and hot water. But only auto camping zones operate during the winter.
Since the resort is located some 700 meters above sea level in Mount Cheongok (1,277 meters), the resort is also known for its nature-friendly atmosphere. The forest is filled with more than 40 different types of pine trees, needleleaf trees and broadleaf trees. (054) 672-1051.
7. Yongdae Recreational Forest in Inje, Gangwon
The resort is in a remote area in a mountainous village in Gangwon. It is the closest forest to the demilitarized zone. In 1996, an armed struggle took place at the resort when some armed North Korean soldiers infiltrated into Gangneung. It is, of course, perfectly peaceful today.
Until 2015, the forest resort wasn’t so popular because the 2.5 kilometer road to the camping zone or the lodge from the entrance was unpaved. When it rained, large puddles formed, making drivers sweat even before setting up their tents. The management decided to pave the road and establish five log cabins by decreasing the size of the site. It was a let down for some campers, but allowed more people to easily access the forest resort. (033) 462-5031.
8. Mount Bangtae Recreational Forest in Inje, Gangwon
If Yongdae Forest Resort is located in the north of Inje in Gangwon, Mount Bangtae Forest Resort is in the south. Although it is the same Inje, the distance between the two is quite large. This resort is also quite remote, but the region is known for wild flowers during spring and summer and colorful foliage during autumn. The Idan Waterfall near the resort is one of the favorite spots for Korea’s many photographers.
The facilities of the resort are somewhat simple and small. There’s just one cabin, nine rooms and 27 camping sites. Visitors should stop at the famous Bangdong Mineral Spring and have a go at drinking fresh mineral-rich water. (033) 463-8590.
9. Mount Yumyeong Recreational Forest in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi
Perhaps due to its closeness to Seoul, this forest resort has the highest number of visitors. According to the Korea Forest Service, about 300,000 people visit the resort per year. The facilities are also quite high-end, and it offers the largest array of recreational programs. Recently, the Korea Forest Service invested 4.1 billion won ($3.6 million) and established a Multi Experience Center. Visitors can enjoy riding bicycles, zip-lines and various leisure sports using Virtual Reality and enjoy a 3-D media show as well. There are 54 rooms and 102 camping zones. (031) 589-5487.

아파트 청약보다 15배 치열한 휴양림 객실은?
전국 43개 국립 자연휴양림 중 변산 자연휴양림(전북 부안)이 가장 예약하기 힘든 인기 휴양림으로 조사됐다. 야영장만 따졌을 때는 대야산 자연휴양림(경북 문경)이 1위였다. 중앙SUNDAY가 산림청과 함께 지난여름 이용객 통계를 분석한 결과다.
산림청은 여름 성수기(7월 15일~8월 24일) 자연휴양림 숙박자를 추첨으로 뽑는다. 신청자가 너무 많아서다. 올해는 여름 성수기 예약 신청을 6월 4~10일 받았다. 이 기간 10만 명 이상이 응모해 평균 객실 경쟁률이 6.45대 1을 기록했다. 변산 자연휴양림에 예약을 신청한 사람은 9515명으로, 경쟁률은 13.79대 1이었다. 대야산 자연휴양림의 야영장 예약 신청자는 1728명이었고 경쟁률은 9.93 대 1이었다.
국립 자연휴양림의 객실·야영장 신청자 수를 토대로 한국인이 사랑하는 휴양림 9곳을 꼽았다. 흥미롭게도 전국 각지의 휴양림이 고루 분포했다. “이용객 수요와 지역별 특성을 고려해 휴양림을 만들고 있다”는 김재현 산림청장의 말마따나 9개 휴양림 모두 개성이 뚜렷했다.
①변산 자연휴양림-전북 부안
2015년 개장한 변산 자연휴양림은 한국 최초의 ‘해안생태형 자연휴양림’이다. 산림문화휴양관(23실)과 숲속의집(10실) 모두 ‘오션 뷰’여서 전망만큼은 럭셔리 리조트가 부럽지 않다. 여름에는 야외 수영장도 운영한다. 숲속의집 중에서 전망이 가장 좋은 ‘위도항(사진)’은 전국 자연휴양림 객실 중 가장 예약하기 힘든 방이다. 지난여름 예약 경쟁률이 무려 213대 1이었다. 상반기 아파트 청약 경쟁률 전국 평균(14.23대 1)보다 무려 15배 치열했다.
변산 자연휴양림은 변산반도 국립공원 어귀에 있다. 채석강·내소사 등 부안의 이름난 관광지도 지척이다. 휴양림 내부 산림휴양관에서 바다로 향하는 길목에 습지관찰원이 있다. 부안을 대표하는 트레일 변산마실길 6코스가 이 앞을 지난다. 해안형 휴양림이어서 체험프로그램도 별나다. 부안 특산물인 천일염·뽕잎·퉁퉁마디 등을 활용한 ‘삼색 건강 소금 만들기 체험’을 한다. 063-581-9977.
②남해편백 자연휴양림-경남 남해
하늘 향해 쭉쭉 뻗은 편백 숲으로 명성이 자자한 휴양림이다. 수많은 영화·드라마·CF에도 등장했다. 이름처럼 편백 우거진 휴양림이다. 삼나무도 울울하다. 나무는 1960년대 심었고, 휴양림은 98년 문을 열었다. 숲에서 뿜어내는 피톤치드 덕분에 휴양림에 머무르면 아토피나 비염 같은 만성 질환이 싹 날 것 같다.
섬 안에 들어선 휴양림이지만, 막상 휴양림에서는 바다가 보이진 않는다. 산책로를 따라 1㎞를 걸어야 한다. 전망대에 오르면 짙푸른 바다가 내다보인다. ‘편백나무 속 아토피 그린체험’은 남녀노소 불문하고 인기가 높은 프로그램이다. 숲 해설사와 치유지도사가 프로그램을 진행한다. 이성계가 천하를 얻고자 기도했다는 금산 보리암, 파독 광부와 간호사가 귀국해 정착한 독일마을 등 남해의 명소도 가깝다. 055-867-7881.
③진도 자연휴양림-전남 진도
객실 외관만 보면 전국 휴양림 중에서 가장 튄다. 아니 괴상하기까지 하다. 거북선 모양의 휴양관, 판옥선을 닮은 숲속의집 때문이다. 영화 ‘명량’ 속으로 들어온 듯하다. 디자인이 다소 조악하다 해도, 진도가 명량대첩의 승전지라는 사실은 명료하게 알려준다.
체험 프로그램에서도 지역색이 묻어난다. 해송 우거진 숲에서 ‘역사와 함께하는 바다숲’ 프로그램을 진행한다. 주변 경관과 조화를 이루는 남도소리 체험관도 있다. 노약자를 위한 무장애 데크로드가 휴양림 안을 가로지르고 있어 누구나 산책하기 좋다. 2017년 7월 진도항 인근에 개장했는데 모든 객실에서 바다가 보인다. 새벽 안개와 소용돌이치는 바다가 특히 인상적이다. 야영장은 없다. 해풍이 강해 야외 바비큐가 금지돼 있다. 061-542-2346.
④대야산 자연휴양림-경북 문경
속리산 국립공원 안쪽 대야산(931m) 자락에 들어선 휴양림이다. 자연환경도 좋지만, 대야산 자연휴양림의 높은 순위는 전적으로 숙소 덕분이다. 30개 객실 모두가 특별하다.
먼저 와인 오크통처럼 생긴 캐빈(사진). 이불과 취사도구가 없어 야영장으로 분류되지만, 온수와 전기는 공급된다. 텐트가 필요 없는 야영장인 셈이다. 덕분에 지난여름 야영장 부문 예약 경쟁률이 9.93대 1로, 전체 1위에 올랐다. ㈔한국목조건축협회로부터 ‘5스타’ 인증을 받은 연립동, 디자인 공모전을 거쳐 주변 산세와 조화롭게 설계한 제2산림문화휴양관도 특별하게 생겼다. 도자기의 고향 문경답게 ‘나만의 도자기 만들기’ 체험 프로그램이 진행된다. 백자 그릇이나 컵에 그림을 그리면 가마에 구워 보내준다. 054-571-7181.
⑤신불산폭포 자연휴양림-울산
전국 43개 국립 자연휴양림 중 유일하게 이름에 ‘폭포’가 붙었다. 휴양림 매표소에서 30분 정도 걸어 들어가면 파래소폭포가 나온다. 폭포수가 15m 높이에서 떨어지고, 폭포 아래 소(沼)는 새파랗고 투명하다. 가을이 무르익으면 폭포보다 산이 마음을 홀린다. 영남알프스에서 두 번째로 높은 신불산(1159m)이 금빛으로 반짝여서다. 휴양림 상단에서 3.3㎞만 걸으면 억새 군락지 ‘간월재’다.
휴양림은 상단과 하단으로 나뉜다. 하단은 자동차로 갈 수 있지만, 상단은 2.3㎞ 산길을 걸어 올라야 한다. ‘불편한 휴양림’으로 악명이 높지만, 가을에는 빈방 찾기가 힘들다. 휴양림에서 하루 한 번 무거운 짐을 날라준다. 지난여름 하단 야영장의 예약 경쟁률은 6.67대 1로, 대야산 자연휴양림 다음으로 인기가 높았다. 052-254-2123.
⑥청옥산 자연휴양림-경북 봉화
캠퍼 사이에서 5성급으로 통하는 휴양림이다. 국립 자연휴양림 중 가장 많은 야영장을 갖췄다. 야영 사이트가 142개나 된다. 캐빈 6실, 오토캠핑장 106면, 야영 데크 24면, 노지 야영장 6면을 갖췄다. 샤워장뿐 아니라 개수대에도 온수가 나오고, 일부 사이트에서는 전기도 쓸 수 있다. 24㎡ 면적의 캠핑 사이트 9개가 있다. 겨울에는 오토캠핑장 35면만 운영한다.
청옥산(1277m) 자락 해발 680~800m 높이에 들어선 휴양림은 자연환경도 5성급이라 할 만하다. 100㎢가 넘는 면적은 국내 자연휴양림 중 최대 규모다. 잣나무·소나무·낙엽송 등 40여 종의 침엽수와 활엽수로 숲이 빽빽하다. 여름에는 서늘하고 가을에는 눈부시다. 지난 7월 13개 객실을 갖춘 산림문화휴양관을 개장했다. 054-672-1051.
⑦용대 자연휴양림-강원도 인제
강원도 산골 오지에 박혀 있는 휴양림이다. 46번 국도 진부령 가는 길에 있다. 이른바 3·8선보다 북쪽에 있는, 휴전선과 가장 가까운 휴양림이다. 96년 강릉 무장공비 침투 사건 때 휴양림에서 교전이 벌어지기도 했다. 물론 지금은 평화롭다.
2015년까지는 인기가 없는 편이었다. 휴양림 입구에서 숙소·야영장까지 이어진 2.5㎞ 비포장도로 때문이었다. 비가 내리면 큰 웅덩이가 파여 운전자가 애를 먹었다. 2015년 아스팔트로 길을 포장했고, 61면에 달하던 야영장 규모를 17면으로 축소했다. 대신 숲속의집 5채를 지었다. 한갓진 숲에서 야영을 즐기던 캠핑 마니아는 아쉬워했지만, 접근성이 개선되면서 만족도는 크게 높아졌다. 매봉산(1271m)에서 발원한 계곡 물소리가 쩌렁쩌렁 휴양림을 울린다. 033-462-5031.
⑧방태산 자연휴양림-강원도 인제
용대 자연휴양림이 강원도 인제 북부에 있으면, 방태산 자연휴양림은 인제 남쪽에 있다. 같은 인제여도 거리가 상당하다. 방태산(1444m)도 용대 못지않은 오지에 있다. 한국 최고의 청정 오지로 꼽히는 ‘삼둔사가리’ 중 하나인 적가리가 방태산 자연휴양림 안에 있다. 봄·여름에는 야생화, 가을에는 단풍으로 유명하다. 계곡과 폭포도 근사하다. 특히 이단 폭포는 사진작가가 사랑하는 단풍사진 명소다.
휴양림 시설은 단출한 편이다. 숲속의집(1실), 산림문화휴양관(9실), 야영 데크(27면)가 전부지만 빼어난 자연 덕에 캠퍼와 일반인 모두에게 인기다. 휴양림 가는 길, 방동약수터에 들러 약수를 마셔보자. 자연보호중앙협의회에서 꼽은 ‘한국의 명수’로 유서가 깊은 약수다. 탄산·철분 함유량이 많아 위장에 좋단다. 033-463-8590.
⑨유명산 자연휴양림-경기도 가평
이용객 수만 따지면 부동의 1위다. 한해 약 30만 명이 이용한다. 서울에서 대중교통으로 갈 수 있을 정도로 접근성이 좋고, 시설도 출중하다. 다른 휴양림에는 없는 자생식물원·습지관찰로·산림복합체험센터 등 여러 체험시설을 갖췄다. 41억원을 들여 지난 3월 개장한 산림복합체험센터는 첨단 서비스를 자랑한다. VR을 활용해 자전거·집라인 등 레포츠를 즐기고 입체 영상쇼인 미디어파사드도 볼 수 있다.
객실 54개, 야영장 102면으로 하루 최대 3000명을 수용한다. 지난 7월 개장한 제2산림문화휴양관은 모던한 디자인이 인상적이다. 야영장 102면 중 캠핑카(캐러밴)를 위한 ‘캠핑카 야영장’이 19면이나 있다. 캠핑카가 없어도 널찍하게 이용할 수 있어 특히 인기가 높다. 031-589-5487.
자연휴양림 숙박 예약
국립 자연휴양림 숙박은 통합 사이트(huyang.go.kr)에서만 예약할 수 있다. 방법은 크게 두 가지다. 평일은 선착순이고, 주말·공휴일은 추첨제다. 평일·휴일 구분은 체크아웃 날짜가 기준이다. 매달 4~9일 다음달 주말·공휴일 예약 신청을 받고 10일 당첨자를 발표한다. 지자체와 개인 휴양림은 각 휴양림 웹사이트에서 예약한다.
