WeAJa charity flea market in four cities Sunday

The 14th annual WeAJa charity flea market will come to Seoul, Busan, Daegu and Daejeon this Sunday, providing attendees a chance to trade goods, bid for items donated by top celebrities and enjoy entertainment and food.

The country’s largest day-long flea market has raised some 1.7 billion won ($1.5 million) since it began in 2005, with all proceeds going to underprivileged children.

Donations by high-profile public figures will be sold at auction, while other things donated by companies, nonprofit organizations and individuals will be sold at fixed prices. The fair also features entertainment, including musical performances, free health consultations, quizzes and crafts.

Programs differ by city.

The flea market will be held in Gwanghwamun Square, central Seoul; in Song Sang-hyeon Square in Busan; in National Debt Repayment Movement Park in Daegu; and in Borame Park in Daejeon.

The fair in Seoul will start at noon and end at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, while those in the other three cities will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Actor Jung Hae-in, who rose to fame early this year when he starred in the JTBC drama “Something in the Rain,” has donated an autographed LP record of the drama’s soundtrack. Actor Seo Kang-joon, who stars in the JTBC drama “The Third Charm,” donated his sneakers and an autograph.

Ahn So-hee, former member of girl band Wonder Girls, donated a white shirt she wore in 2012 while performing the hit song, “Like This.” Kim Jae-hwan, main vocalist for the K-pop boy band Wanna One, gave a shirt he wore last April while performing “I Promise You,” and a copy of the band’s “1÷x=1 (Undivided)” album with seven members’ signatures.

Olympic figure skating star Kim Yuna gave a pair of white skates, and Lotte Giants player Lee Dae-ho donated a cap and gloves.

This year’s event is co-hosted by the JoongAng Ilbo, JTBC and government offices of Seoul, Busan, Daegu and Daejeon. Free parking will not be offered and people are advised to go via public transport. Admission is free. Purchased items cannot be returned.
