(Shin Sung-il… the man of our fantasies.)

This is today’s anchor briefing.

In the early 1960s Chungmuro was not only the area between Toegye-ro and Eulji-ro, but also the symbolic center of the Korean film industry. The Chungmuro I often passed in my youth was the birthplace of Korean movies. The still pictures from Korean movies that were plastered in the show windows of photo studios that lined the street made it a place of romance and dreams.

The first time I saw actors Shin Sung-il and Um Ang-ran was when they were filming a scene for a movie on the streets of Chungmuro on a rainy evening. This was before the two got married. Shin Sung-il. He was the 1960’s symbol of youth. What’s fascinating is that, even when he was in his 80s, it was hard to describe his personality without using the word youth. In the late 1960s he drove a red Mustang, and like the car he drove, he was untamed and wild. He and his car went down as the symbols of youth in our society.

I remember when I first saw him in his red sports car when I was a middle schooler. To me, he seemed like someone who didn’t belong to our world. That’s right. Shin Sung-il, to us, is often perceived as someone beyond the ties of our reality. Perhaps, if there had to be someone who was allowed to live in everyone’s fantasy during a time of poverty, then it seemed like it would have to be him.

Later on in life, I saw him once again while I was moderating a debate. He had come to watch as a member of the National Assembly. When I met him, I told him about my memory of him on the rainy streets of Chungmuro on and how I felt when I would see him and his red sports car. He replied with a brief ‘Oh, I see…’ Back then, I thought his short response was because he felt a bit of regret for having to come out of his fantasy world to live the life of a politician.

* mediate: 중재[조정]하다

This was what I thought. From now on, whenever I talk about him, I will still mention the rainy Chungmuro streets and his red sports car. However, the more I do, the more it means that our youthful, romantic days have slipped away from us.
