Local shoppers can also get the best Black Friday deals
Black Friday is when people line up all night to take advantage of huge discounts from retailers on the day after Thanksgiving. With many online retailers also offering similar discounts to shoppers around the globe, people in Korea have started to seek out outlets where Black Friday sales are offered.
Many local retailers are now offering discounts of their own to take advantage of the shopping frenzy. Lotte Group is holding Lotte Black Festa, and putting around five million products on sale until Tuesday - costing a total of about one trillion won ($885.6 million). The promotion, which started last year, includes 10 Lotte Group subsidiaries participating, including Lotte Department Store and Lotte Mart. The company said the promotion is about two times larger this year. Even the movie tickets to Lotte Cinema are up to 30 percent cheaper when purchased online.
E-Mart is also having a sale on 2,000 items through Nov. 28. It has been providing discounts to celebrate the store’s 25th anniversary, and as of Nov. 11, the retailer saw a nearly 11 percent increase in overall sales and a five percent increase in the number of shoppers during the same period last year. Everything from electronics to fresh foods are part of the promotion.
Some department stores are promoting their sales on items made by international brands, such as Dyson, which are known to be items locals often look to buy from overseas. AK Plaza is promoting their sales on Apple’s Airpods, down jackets from The North Face and Dyson vacuum cleaners.
E-commerce websites, which release a variety of deals for the limited amount of time, are also going strong with their promotions. Until Nov. 30, WeMakePrice, will release popular items such as the Sony Playstation 4 Pro at 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The move came after the online retailer was overwhelmed by customers during the 50 percent off promotion it had until Nov. 11, and the company decided to continue the promotion through the end of this month. The 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. discounts will also offer buy one, get one free items from time to time to attract more shoppers.
