This is today’s anchor briefing.

This started traveling through Asia, Greece then all throughout the Europe as Alexander the Great crossed the globe to expand his empire. Later on, this very same thing became a symbol for religion, art and literature. Its sweet history spread into everyone’s hearts only after the horrors of war. We are talking about the tangerine.

* horror: 공포(감), 경악

The tangerine, to us, is like a double-edged sword. During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the tangerine was valuable crop that was sent to the King’s table every November according to the lunar calendar. The King would celebrate the tangerine’s arrival by opening a Gwageo test (a civil servant examination during the Joseon Dynasty). The name of the Gawgeo was Hwanggamje, named after the tangerine itself. The test takers who participate in the Hwanggamje got to snack upon them during their test and were even allowed to take some home. It was a fun tradition in the midst of the tense test taking atmosphere.

On the other hand, tangerines are also the symbol of oppression. If there was a tangerine tree in the village, subjects were required to send tangerines to the king regardless if there was any ready for harvest. During King Yeonsangun’s reign, his subjects were repeatedly pushed to bring tangerines to his table. Often many would pluck the tangerine tree from its roots because they were sick and tired of King’s constant requests. The misery is a result from the fact that tangerines were too delicious and sweet to pass away.

Yesterday and today, a military transport aircraft full of Jeju tangerines made its journey to the North. The tangerines sent can be interpreted in different ways because these tangerines would not have been sent just as a gift. Some speculate that these tangerines were sent as to remind the receiver that we are waiting for a reply, others have even speculated that the military transport aircrafts might hold something more than just tangerines. Tangerines have spread throughout Asia through war, so the socio-political meaning that they have is profoundly mysterious and cannot be ignored.

There is no way to correctly predict what results these gifts might bring. but as long as we don’t hear that these tangerines somehow magically changed into trifoliate oranges after crossing the Huaishui River, then we could say that the message was delivered.

* trifoliate oranges: 탱자
