Say goodbye to the long-haired actor Phillip Lee and meet businessman Lee, owner of the skincare company PRO RE NATA.

The Korean-American actor made his TV debut with the MBC drama “The Legend” in 2007, gaining popularity for his strong and masculine look that was smoothed out by his gentle and calm voice. He made his name as a part of the cast of the 2010 SBS drama “Secret Garden,” and it seemed that yet another SBS drama, “Faith,” would have put him on a path to a greater career in the entertainment industry.

However, Lee suffered a severe injury to his eyes while he was carrying out an action scene for “Faith,” putting him at a 75 percent chance of losing his eyesight. He fortunately recovered but was forced to leave acting since he could not bear the lights used on set. So Lee prepared himself for something different: a new life as the owner of a skincare product company.

In April, Lee launched a new skincare brand named PRO RE NATA with his company Katalyst, after two years of careful preparation. The words may not be the most common words that you would hear on a daily basis, but both names carry special meaning for Lee.

“Pro re nata” is a Latin term used for medical prescriptions, which literally translates to “as required,” and refers to medication that can be applied as often as necessary to the patient in question. Keeping true to its name, all six of the products for different skin types are designed in a simple cylinder shape with a white label on it, as if it’s been prescribed by a doctor.

“The name is from an actual medical term,” said Lee. “I wanted to make something that would prescribe you just what you need, according to the different conditions of the skin.”

Lee sat down for an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, to introduce himself as businessman Lee. The following are edited excerpts.

Q. Why did you take on the role of a businessman after you left acting?

A
. I had run a small IT company for two years, based on the things that I learned from my father (founder and president of Virginia-based IT company STG, Lee Soo-dong). Then I came to acting in 2007 thanks to an acquaintance of mine. My thought was that I could always start a business when I was older, but that I couldn’t pursue acting in 10 years time. And so I took the leap to become an actor. After the unfortunate accident, I became unable to continue my acting career. That’s when I thought, ‘This is the time to start a business again.’

So why skincare?

While I was spending two years trying to recover from my eye injury, I thought a lot about the ways in which I could steer my life in a better direction. The name of the company, Katalyst means a catalyst that changes [you] for the better. I thought that skincare would be a small catalyst for change - not just an aethetic one, but one capable of making your life more vibrant and make you more beautiful.

There are different types of products - like gels or creams - but they can all be sprayed onto the face directly like a mist.

Why did you choose this particular method?

I wanted the products to be used frequently and in cases when people want to apply them without having to wash their hands to put them on. I actually put a lot of effort into finding the right pump [for the spray].

You seem very proud of your brand. What are you most proud of?

I only used the best ingredients, thinking that it would be members of my own family who were going to use it. Of course, I had the urge to make it stand out from the existing [skincare] brands. That’s the reason why I used plant placenta and plant stem cells as the main ingredient. Plant placenta is responsible for the germination and growth of fruits and are only made in the smallest amounts, which makes them very expensive. But it has all the necessary energy and nutrition within it.

Please sum up your brand, as businessman Lee.

It’s for both men and women, but how they feel about the product will be different for them. So I wouldn’t tell anyone that this is the best and you should only use this. You can use what you have been using, and just take an interest in the new things. The decision can come later.
