I could not do anything. I had to reschedule a water filter installment appointment, but both my home and mobile phones were not working. I had to pick up my dog from the vet, but I could not pay because the credit card payment was not working. I read a wedding invitation from a relative on a mobile messenger, but I couldn’t go back and check the time of the wedding. As I could not get navigation working, I had to take a taxi. Since ATM machines were offline, I didn’t give them a gift.

The fire at KT’s switching center in western Seoul,confirmed the irony of a smart life in a world-class smart city. With a useless smartphones in hand, kids say we went back to the stone age.

What aggravates the damage at the time of a natural disaster is the paralysis of communication. It not only delays rescue operations, but also results in psychological isolation. It happened during the earthquake in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang, as well as during the recent earthquake in Hokkaido, Japan. In the movie “The Day After Tomorrow,” the protagonist searched for a payphone in a city that was underwater. The outdated payphone turns out to be the hero’s savior. Over the weekend, many people went around in search for a public telephone booth.

With the internet outage in northwestern Seoul, former lawmaker Lee Seok-ki, who is serving a nine-year sentence for a charge of instigating an online rebellion, became the talk of the town. A recording of a meeting in May 2013 showed that Lee and an underground organization known as RO considered striking KT’s Hyehwa branch and an oil storage tank in Pyeongtaek.

Lee said, “On behalf of those Korean people who desire an end to the United States’ imperial system, I need to prepare myself as the person in charge of the South’s revolution.” He has been in prison for five years. A few days ago, Lee was awarded the Buddhist Human Rights Award by the Buddhist Human Rights Commission of the Jogye Order.

Many online comments say that they can understand why Lee planned to attack KT’s Hyehwa center. People realized that without advanced hacking technology, simply opening the cable tunnel cover and starting a fire could paralyze society. But others wonder why North Korea and its sympathizers are mentioned. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

It is natural that we need to prepare for such catastrophe as an intentional attack by someone, including North Korea. We are living in the age of the fourth industrial revolution, and people and space are all hyperconnected. As networks become more complicated, security becomes more vulnerable.

'석기시대'가 불러낸 이석기
뭐 하나 할 수가 없었다. 정수기 설치 시간을 미뤄야 하는데 집 전화와 휴대전화가 불통이니 속수무책. 병원에 맡긴 강아지를 데려오는데 카드 결제가 안 돼 일단 외상. 카톡으로 온 친지의 청첩장을 얼핏 보고 말았는데, 예식 시간도 헷갈리고 길 찾기 검색도 안 돼 무조건 택시로 출발. ATM 기계가 안 돼 축의금도 외상. KT 서울 아현지사 지하 통신구 화재가 확인해준 세계 최고 수준 스마트시티에서의 스마트라이프의 역설이다. 무용지물이 된 스마트폰을 손에 든 아이들은 ‘석기시대’라고 했다.
자연재해가 발생했을 때 피해를 더 키우는 것은 통신의 마비다. 구조 자체를 더디게 할 뿐만 아니라 심리적 고립감이 초래하는 부정적 상황도 적지 않다. 경주 지진 때도, 최근 일본 홋카이도 대지진 때도 그랬다. 지구 전체가 빙하로 뒤덮인다는 설정의 영화 ‘투모로우’에서 주인공이 물에 잠긴 도시에서 공중전화를 찾으려 애쓰는 장면이 나온다. 퇴물 공중전화는 통신두절 상태의 구세주다. 주말 서울에서도 공중전화를 찾아 헤매는 이가 많았다.
서울 서북부 지역의 인터넷 먹통 사태와 함께 온라인상에선 내란 선동 혐의로 9년형을 선고받고 복역 중인 이석기 통합진보당 전 의원의 이름이 종일 거론됐다. 2013년 5월 이 전 의원과 통칭 RO(지하혁명조직)의 회합 녹취록에서 나온 KT 혜화지사와 평택 유류 저장고 타격 언급을 상기해서다. 이 전 의원은 “미 제국주의 군사적 방향과 군사체계를 끝장내겠다는, 이러한 전체 조선 민족의 입장에서 남녘의 역량을 책임지는 사람답게 준비해야…”라며 관련 발언을 했다. 수감 5년째. 이 전 의원은 며칠 전 조계종 산하 불교인권위원회가 주는 ‘불교인권상’을 옥중 수상했다.
온라인 의견엔 ‘이석기가 왜 KT 혜화 기지를 공격하려 했는지 알겠다’는 글이 많다. 고난도 해킹 기술 없이 ‘통신구 뚜껑’만 열고 불을 붙이면 우리 사회가 마비될 수 있음을 피부로 느꼈기 때문일 게다. 그런데 ‘왜 이 판에 또 북한과 종북을 끌어들이냐’는 반박 댓글도 적잖다. 이번 화재 원인은 아직 모른다. 이런 일이 북한을 포함해 누군가의 의도적인 공격으로 발생했을 때 초래될 재앙에 대비해야 한다는 건 상식적이고도 당연한 주장이다. 4차 산업혁명 시대다. 현실 세계와 사이버, 사물과 사람, 공간이 인터넷을 매개로 물샐틈없이 연동하는 초연결 사회에 진입해 있다. 망이 촘촘해질수록 더 취약한 게 우리의 안보다. 지금 이 순간도 나의 스마트폰은 먹통이다.
