[앵커브리핑] '라면의 정치경제학' (“The socio-economical definition of ramen.”)

This is today’s anchor briefing.

In the early autumn of 1963, the talk of town was about a new foreign food. Ramen. You could say that I was lucky enough to have tasted the new delicacy on the day it went on sale, with my family. We gathered around, blowing on the steaming hot noodles, tasting it as if we were explorers visiting a new civilization.

* civilization: 문명

These curly instant noodles immediately changed Korean food culture. Actually, if you come to think about it, the change wasn’t just confined to food culture. Back in 1963, the curly ramen noodles were just an enjoyable meal for us. Little did we know that ramen would become a new definition for the socio-political realm. Ten years later, a new word “Rabottae” was born. “Rabottae” is an abbreviation of the Korean sentence, “[I] usually make do with ramen as my meal.”

The word started trending between young female workers at Guro Industrial Complex during the pinnacle of the industrialization period - the 1970s and 1980s. It was a time when sewing machines were running around the clock. Factory workers, who were split into two shifts, morning and evening, made ramen in the rooms that they shared to ease their hunger. Ramen was their way of handling the hard labor. Ramen’s signature curly noodles were hard to digest and if consumed with cold rice, kept you full for a long time. There were even a few somewhat gloomy studies that sought to prove that the ramen helped many workers forget the hardships of labor.

“A steamy hot pot… people sitting around the pot, eyeing the other eagerly as they hold their chopsticks in a ready position. The tension that comes before the meal adds flavor to the ramen itself.” - An Do-hyeon “Praise for Ramen”

The poet’s lyrical praise for ramen might have been recreated in a much more luxurious manner, but the expression still derives from the hardships that we had to go through in our past. Ramen is still a meal that young people turns to when they want to save time and money.

Ramen was there when Kim died two years ago while fixing a platform door at Guui Station, and it was present when another worker who goes by the surname Kim died while inspecting a conveyor belt at the Taean thermal power plant. Forcing one person to do all the work and their leftover ramen… No matter how much time goes by, the labor that workers are forced to do remains and so does ramen’s socio-political significance: a meal that helps workers bear the hardships or allows them to just barely get by.
