[앵커브리핑] '우리 신문도 그날은 출판 아니할 터이요' “Our newspaper will not publish an edition [on Christmas Day]”

"우리 신문도 그날은 출판 아니할 터이요. 이십팔 일에 다시 출판할 터이니 그리들 아시오." 1897년 12월 23일 자 '독립신문'에 실린 공고문입니다. "세계 만국이 일 년 중 제일가는 명절로 여기며 온종일 쉰다"던 그 날은 크리스마스였습니다. 지금으로부터 120여 년 전 이 땅의 언론인들은 새로 들어온 서양 명절을 핑계 삼아 그야말로 꿀 휴가를 보냈던 셈입니다. 신문마저 당당히 쉬겠다고 선언한 이 날은 이후 조선 땅에서 쭈욱 축제로 기록됩니다.
“Our newspaper will not publish an edition [on Christmas Day]. Publication will start again on Dec. 28.” This was a small announcement that was published in the Dec. 23, 1897 edition of “The Independent” — Korea’s first newspaper published in hangul. “That day is one of the most festive holidays year round and is celebrated by taking a rest.” That day was Christmas. More than 120 years ago, journalists used Christmas as an excuse to rest. After the holiday was reported in the newspaper, celebrating Christmas becomes an official tradition in the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

한국전쟁이 마무리된 1953년의 크리스마스 전야… 이날 딱 하루만큼은 통금이 해제되어 사람들은 긴 긴 밤을 새워가며 나름의 축제를 즐겼습니다. 그것은 긴 전쟁의 공포에서 해방되었다는 위로와 안도의 표현이기도 했습니다. 그런가 하면 60~70년대의 성탄절은 '고요한 밤 거룩한 밤'이 아닌 '소란한 밤'이 되었다는 우려 섞인 기사들이 나왔습니다. "엄마 아빠 일찍 집에 돌아가 주세요" 아이들이 캠페인을 벌였고 '크레이지 마스', '크리스마스 차일드'라는 신조어까지 등장했습니다.
On Christmas Eve 1953, the year the Korean War (1950-1953) ended, the curfew was lifted nationwide and people were allowed to spend the night celebrating. Indeed, the celebration was an expression of comfort and relief to finally be liberated from the long war. In comparison, Christmas during the 1960s through 1970s was far from “a holy night.” It instead was deemed a “chaotic” night, with headlines telling of its disorganized nature spread throughout the news. “Mom, dad, please come home early [on Christmas]” was one of the few campaigns that was implemented to stop “crazy Christmas.” The deranged fun that the adults would enjoy amongst themselves gave birth to the phrase “Christmas child” — a baby that was conceived on Christmas.

이즈음의 크리스마스란, 글쎄요. 단지 나이가 들어 그만한 정열이 덜해서인가… 아니면 나이가 청춘이라 해도 아니, 청춘일수록 그렇게 신날 일이 덜해서인가… 따지고 보면 그 어느 해 크리스마스이든 아프고 힘든 사람들이 없었던 것도 아니고, 명동성당 앞마당엔 일터를 빼앗긴 사람들의 천막이 가득했던 것도 다반사였지만…
Christmas nowadays is, I don’t know, a bit subdued. Maybe it’s because I’ve grown older and lost that passion or maybe it’s because the younger generation nowadays rarely has anything to cherish and celebrate. If you think about it, no matter at which point in time, there was always people who suffered. There was always people putting up tents in front of the Myeongdong Catholic Cathedral with no place else to go.

2018년의 성탄절은 진정 온 것일까… 하늘에 떠 앉은 노동자들과 함께, 하필 가장 추운 계절에 아프게 세상을 떠난 이들과 함께… 기독교를 믿든 믿지 않든 크리스마스라는 이름이 가져다주는 이미지는 뭔가 들뜨고, 설레고, 안 될 일도 될 것 같은 그런 것… 적어도 이 땅에서는 120년 전부터 그래왔던 것… 한때는 크레이지 마스의 꼴불견을 모두가 한탄할 때도 있었지만 그래도 일 년에 한 번쯤은 들썩들썩할 일도 있었으면 바라는 오늘, 성탄절은 진정 온 것일까…
Regardless, one is left questioning if Christmas has really come this year. What with the workers we left to float toward the heavens and the ones that we had to say goodbye to during the coldest season of all. Whether you’re a Christian or not, the images that Christmas brings about are festivities, light heartedness and the feeling that something new is going to happen. At least it was like that 120 years ago in Korea. There was, even at one point, a time when Christmas was condemned as “crazy Christmas.” As such, it was a time when people were allowed to let down their hair and be merry. This image is quite different today, so we are left to question, has Christmas really come?

“[Christmas] is thought of as one of the most festive holidays year round, which is why we choose to rest. Our newspaper will not publish a new edition on that day.” The announcement seems like an advertisement for Christmas, but if you read between the lines, you can detect the joy that the people were feeling about the new western holiday.
