Seongnam FC signs Mathias Coureur from Martiniquais

Korean football club Seongnam FC said Wednesday they’ve acquired Martiniquais winger Mathias Coureur.

Seongnam, returning to the top flight K League 1 for the first time since 2016, said Coureur has completed a medical test and is currently training with the team for the 2019 season.

Coureur made his pro debut in 2007 with then-second-tier French club Beauvais. He then had stints in Spain, Bulgaria and Georgia. The 30-year-old winger played for the Kazakh club FC Kaisar last season.

Seongnam said Coureur is a player who has pace and technique and can also play as a central-attacking midfielder. Seongnam also said Coureur will adjust to Korean culture well with his abundant experiences overseas.

“I have big expectations for Korean football,” Coureur said through the club. “I want to prove my value with goals and assists.”

Seongnam, led by head coach Nam Ki-il, has seven K League 1 titles, the most among all clubs. It was the runner-up in the K League 2 last season, but returned to the first division after the second division champions Asan Mugunghwa were disqualified from promotion.

In K League 2 last season, Seongnam had a record of 17 wins, 11 draws and seven losses in 36 matches, totaling 65 points.

Asan, run by the Korean police, was denied promotion after it failed to submit a recruitment plan for 2019.
