This is today’s anchor briefing.

In 1967, Kathrine Switzer was only a 20-year-old college student. She wanted to participate in the Boston Marathon, but at that time, marathons were exclusively for men. The entry form for the marathon did not have a space to mark one’s sex, of course.

Switzer couldn’t agree to this. So, she submitted her entry form without revealing her sex and wore a dark lipstick to the race. “Get that woman out of here!” A marathon staffer shoved her, but Switzer’s coach, her boyfriend, and the runners running alongside her stopped them, allowing her to finish the race.

If the incident ended there, it would have just been a one-time commotion. But… Five years later, the Boston Marathon allowed women to participate. The world was able to take a step forward due to one person’s courage to break through hard walls, and people who were willing to help.

The female skaters still looked scared. They had to postpone a scheduled press conference several times, and couldn’t disclose the names of those who had sexually abused them even though they said they would do so. Afraid that they would be re-victimized, and afraid that their careers would end, they are overcome with unsettled fear and terror for their future.

It could also mean that they do not trust the public who will lose interest after the issue dies down.

Jultakdongsi – this is an idiomatic phrase that means in order for a baby chick to hatch from its egg, it needs to peck its way out, but also needs help from the mother hen, who should also peck from the outside. An egg can only hatch if efforts are made from both the inside and outside.

Similarly, just like the people who helped Switzer finish the race, if there were more people who weren’t afraid to speak up about wrongdoings that have been done throughout the years, wouldn’t that allow the world to progress?

Two years ago, a 70-year-old Kathrine Switzer, who wasn’t afraid to run alongside men 50 years prior, participated in the Boston Marathon again. This time was no different. She finished the marathon safely. Panting and out of breath, she said: “The upcoming 50 years will be better.”
