THE 37TH KOREA GALLERIES ART FAIR

COEX Hall C, Gangnam District

From Feb. 21 to 24: The oldest surviving art fair in Korea, organized by the Galleries Association of Korea, will present about 2,000 pieces of artwork from 500 artists at the booths of 111 galleries.

This year’s edition will introduce an exhibition of young artists chosen through an open contest. The exhibition, titled “Paranoid Park,” will feature 12 aspiring artists.

Choi Woong-chol, the new president of the Galleries Association of Korea, said, “This year’s edition is the largest-ever and will show the diversity of Korean contemporary art.”

Admission is 10,000 won ($8.87) for adults. Go to Bongeunsa Station, Line No. 9, exit 7.

The 18th SongEun ArtAward Exhibition

SongEun Art Space, Gangnam District

Through Feb. 28: This annual exhibition features new works by four finalists of this year’s SongEun Art Award’s Grand Prize - Joon Kim, Park Kyung-ryul, Uesung Lee and Eun Chun.

On Jan. 8, the SongEun Art and Cultural Foundation announced that the Grand Prize went to Kim, who presented three sound-based artworks. Among the works is “Ecosystem,” which consists of 12 speakers that play sounds the artist collected over six years from 12 different places - six cities, including Seoul and London, and six rural areas, including Korea’s Mount Jiri and Australia’s Blue Mountains.

Admission is free. The art space is closed Sundays. Go to Cheongdam Station, Line No. 7, exit No. 9, and walk for 10 minutes.

ASIA HOTEL ART FAIR BUSAN 2019

From Feb. 28 through March 3: Seeing artworks hung up on a gallery or museum wall is fun, but for ardent collectors, it’s important to know whether a piece will fit on their home’s bedroom or living room wall.

And for those art lovers, the Asia Art Net Committee presents Asia Hotel Art Fair (AHAF) Busan 2019 at the southern port city’s Paradise Hotel Busan.

The 18th AHAF will be held outside Seoul for the first time, after a streak of successful events were held in luxury hotels throughout Seoul.

This year’s event will take place in 71 rooms at the hotel, where some 2,000 works by 300 artists will be displayed. Some 50 art galleries will each occupy at least one room to display some of the finest works they have to offer to prospective buyers.

A special exhibition will also take place at La Bella Citta, located near Gwangan Beach.

To liven up the event, this year’s AHAF includes the “Art & Gourmet Tour,” sponsored by the city of Busan, in which the visitors will be able to enjoy a tour around the city’s finest tourist spots and restaurants.

Admissions cost 10,000 won. The event will open to visitors from March 1 to 3 after a VIP opening on Feb. 28.

ENLIGHTENED MIND & PRIVATE MOON

Savina Museum of Contemporary Art,

Eunpyeong District

Through March 3: Savina, one of Korea’s top private museums, recently relocated to northern Seoul’s Eunpyeong district and opened new exhibitions to celebrate the relocation.

The main exhibition, which is being held in the two galleries, is a group show titled “Enlightened Mind - The Artists’ Way to Meditation.” It features works by 28 Korean and foreign artists, ranging from Park Sun-gi’s installation work to Michael Kenna’s photography, which have therapeutic qualities.

And “Private Moon,” being held on the fifth floor, is a solo show of Russian artist Leonid Tishkov, who is famous on social media for his romantic photographs of the illuminating crescent he created and temporarily put in various places all around the world.

The exhibition includes 13 pieces from his photo series and the artificial crescent installed on the museum’s roof.

Admission is 8,000 won ($7.10) for adults. The museum is a 20-minute walk from Gupabal Station, Line No. 3. You can take the 720 bus, which stops near exit 3, and get off at Pokpo-dong bus stop.

GORYEO: THE GLORY OF KOREA

National Museum of Korea, Yongsan District

Through March 3: Since 2018 marked the 1,100th anniversary of the Goryeo Dynasty’s (918-1392) founding, the National Museum has organized a grand exhibition that allows visitors to learn about the dynasty that is often eclipsed by other eras, such as Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla and Joseon.

Some 450 artifacts from 56 different organizations and institutions from both Korea and abroad - including the United States, England, Italy and Japan - are on display, including the Statue of Master Huirang, which is Korea’s Treasure No. 999 and belongs to Haein Temple in Hapcheon, South Gyeongsang.

Unfortunately, the statue of Taejo Wang Geon - the founder of Goryeo - that belongs to North Korea could not make it to the exhibit.

Goryeo was established by King Taejo, or Wang Geon, in 918. The dynasty lasted for some 500 years and during that time had active exchanges with neighboring countries, developing a unique and cosmopolitan culture.

THE NYANG: LOVE LIKE CATS

PopconD Square in IPark Mall, Yongsan District

Through March 3: The exhibition brings together photographs, paintings and sculptures by 14 artists - among them illustrator Bae Sung-tae, webtoon artist Dolbae and photographer Lee Yong-han - to celebrate their special connection to cats.

These artists portray cats in their own creative ways - some of these furry animals are wearing hanbok (traditional Korean dress), while others are dressed like Hollywood stars.

Admission is 11,000 won for adults. Get off at Yongsan Station, Line No. 1, exit 2 and go to the sixth floor in the mall.
