Korea touted as top country for 5G

Korea’s early dominance of the 5G market has been confirmed by management consultancy Arthur D. Little (ADL).

ADL identified Korea as the “Most advanced in 5G Leadership,” on its 5G Leadership Index released Friday.

Korea’s 5G proficiency was demonstrated early last year, when KT demonstrated the world’s first 5G trial services at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Other 5G leaders shown on the index include the United States, Australia, Qatar and Switzerland, while France and Germany are noticeably behind the curve.

The evaluation, conducted on 40 nations, was concluded based on the analysis of technical infrastructure and commercialization tendency of the next-generation wireless technology.

“Leaders have 5G spectrum allocated, high-performance backhaul infrastructure deployed, have announced ambitious goals for 5G launch or launched already, and have successfully trialed multiple use-cases,” ADL said. “Additionally, they demonstrate a willingness to adopt new services and have the right level of competition to foster commercialization.”

Korea’s demonstration of 5G at the international sports event in February last year was a major factor considered for the country’s ranking on the index.
