FTC levies 417 million won in fines for false advertising

The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) fined two companies for falsely advertising air purifiers.

The FTC announced Wednesday it issued a total of 417 million won ($368,521) in fines to Amway Korea and Gatevision for falsely advertising the real capabilities of their air purifiers.

Amway Korea advertised both online and in print that their Atmosphere air purifiers could remove 99.99 percent of air pollutants, including fine dust and viruses. Gatevision claimed online that Dyson and Blueair products could remove 99.97 percent of pollutants.

Investigations revealed those numbers came from limited, experimental settings and would potentially make consumers think those air purifiers would perform as advertised in real life, the FTC said.

The commission added the announcement will remind companies to focus on providing accurate information. The FTC previously levied 1.676 billion won in fines on 13 air purifier makers and retailers last year for the same reason.
