This is today's anchor briefing.

기억하실지 모르겠지만… 지금으로부터 30년 전에 우리 모두가 들었던 옛이야기가 하나 있습니다.

I do not know whether you remember… There is an old story that we all heard 30 years ago.

중국 한 마을의 동장이 도랑의 물이 잘 흐르도록 바닥의 쓰레기를 끌어모아 깨끗하게 청소를 했습니다. 당연히 사람들이 고마워할 줄 알았는데 반응은 정반대였지요.

The chief of a village in China cleaned the trash that laid at the bottom of a ditch so that the water could flow smoothly. The chief thought that people would thank him, but the reaction was the complete opposite.

"당신이 미꾸라지를 다 잡아먹기 위해 도랑을 치운 게 아니냐"

“Didn’t you clean the ditch to catch and eat all the mudfish by yourself?

사람들은 오히려 동장을 비난하고 나서더라는 겁니다. 너무나 억울했던 동장은 한밤중에 몰래 마을을 떠나버렸습니다. 선의를 위한 일이라도 대중이 곡해한다면 그것은 어쩔 수 없다는 이야기였습니다.

People instead came out to blame the chief. The chief, who was falsely accused, left the village secretly at night. This story tells us that even if actions are taken with good intentions, it cannot be helped when the public misinterprets them.

30년 전에 이 이야기를 들려준 사람은 바로 1989년 제5공화국 청문회에 출석한 전직 대통령 전두환 씨였습니다.

This story was told to us 30 years ago by Chun Doo Hwan, former president of Korea, at his hearing held in the National Assembly in 1989.

그는 기자들을 모아놓은 자리에서 준비해온 발표문을 낭독했습니다.
"저에겐 이제 도망칠 곳도 없습니다. 5공 청산을 위해서라면 감옥에라도 가겠습니다"
그는 염치를 아는, 창피하지 않은 전직 대통령으로 기억되고 싶다고 말했지요.

In a space where reporters were gathered, he recited an announcement that he prepared.
“I do not have anywhere to escape anymore. If it is to settle the vestiges of my presidency, I will go as far as going to prison.”
He said he wanted to be remembered as a former president who knows shame and is not an embarrassment.

그 후 강산이 세 번 변하는 동안 그는 정말 자신의 소망대로 기억되고 있을까…

As the landscape has changed three times over (equal to 30 years; from a Korean saying: “After ten years, even rivers and mountains change”), is he really remembered as he wished?

“I only have 290,000 won ($256) in my savings account.”

이런 사고는 그의 배우자 역시 마찬가지여서 많은 어록을 만들어내기도 했습니다.

This type of thinking was shared by his wife who is also known for her many quotations.

"민주주의의 아버지…우리 남편이라고 생각"

“We were also innocent victims of the May 18th incident.
“The father of democracy… I think is my husband.”

그는 넘치도록 당당했고 그 당당함은 바이러스처럼 퍼져 광주를 왜곡하고 모욕하는 자들의 자양분이 되었습니다.

He was over-imposing and that stance spread like a virus and became nutrients to those who distort and insult Gwangju.

*imposing: 당당한, *stance: 태도

은둔해있던 산속 사찰에서 나와 보무도 당당히 걸음을 옮겼던 사람. 그 유명해진 골목성명 후 합천으로 내려가 다음날 새벽 동도 트기 전에 연행될 때도 당당했던 사람… 그는 오래전 자신이 이야기한 중국 고사 속 억울하게 도망친 동장에게 스스로를 빗댄 이후 한 번도 생각을 바꾸지 않았음에 틀림없습니다.

Leaving the temple in the mountains where he lived in seclusion, he marched in a stately manner. After his famous alleyway statement, he went down to his hometown Hapcheon (South Gyeongsang) and kept his dignity even as he was taken away at dawn the next day…. It is certain that he still has not changed his mind from when he compared himself to the village chief from the Chinese folklore, who ran away under false accusation.

그래서 그는 늘 억울합니다.

That is why he says he is falsely accused.
