이명박, 원자바오, 간 나오토. 3국의 정상은 동일본 대지진의 피해를 위로하기 위해서 현장을 찾았습니다. '어서오세요' 라고 쓰인 환영 현수막과 함께 세 정상에게 제공된 것은 후쿠시마현에서 키워낸 체리, 방울토마토, 그리고 오이 등이었습니다.

Lee Myung-bak, Wen Jiabao and Naoto Kan. The leaders of three countries visited eastern Japan to offer consolation to victims after a severe earthquake. A banner that read “welcome” greeted them, and the three leaders were offered cherries, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers grown in Fukushima.

원전사고 피해지역 농수산물의 판매를 돕기 위한 이른바 '먹어서 응원하자' 이벤트였습니다. 원자바오 총리는 오이를 한입 깨물었고 당시 우리 대통령은 성격대로 한 조각을 다 삼켰다고 하는데… 알고 보니 이 행사는 사전 협의 없이 진행된 외교적 결례였습니다. 당황한 수행원들이 부랴부랴 방사능 측정기를 구해서 채소의 안전성을 확인했다는 후문마저 돌았습니다.

This event was called “Cheering Through Eating” and it sought to promote sales of agricultural products from the areas affected by the nuclear disaster in 2011. It was said that Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao bit into a slice of cucumber and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, true to his personality, ate the whole thing… It turned out that this event was carried out without prior consultation and was considered a diplomatic discourtesy. There were rumors that the president’s entourage, surprised by the unscheduled tasting, hurried to get a radiation detector and checked whether the vegetables were safe to eat.

재난당한 지역을 위로하는 것은 인지상정이긴 하지요. 우박으로 피해 입은 지역의 과일을 구매하거나 산불로 타들어 간 속초 고성지역으로 오히려 나들이를 떠나는 사람들의 마음은 사실 모두 같습니다.

It is in our nature to give consolation and help victims affected by disaster. Everyone shares the same spirit when they buy fruit grown in an area damaged by hail or when they go on a trip to Sokcho or Goseong County in Gangwon, even though the area is in ashes due to the recent wildfire.

그래서일까 집단을 강조하는 일본은 유독 적극적이었던 모양입니다. 후쿠시마의 물. 편의점에서는 후쿠시마 수돗물을 판매하였고 훈남 요리사가 후쿠시마산 식재료로 요리를 하는 드라마도 방영됐습니다. 하지만 이것이 단순히 '먹어서 응원한다'고 해서 해결될 일인가.

Perhaps, it is because of this very nature that Japan was quite enthusiastic in helping their neighbors out, as its culture prioritizes the group over the individual. Bottled water from Fukushima was sold in convenience stores and a television show featuring a handsome chef cooking with ingredients from Fukushima was aired. However, this problem cannot be solved simply by “cheering through eating.”

후쿠시마 농산물을 즐겨 먹는다고 했던 유명 방송인은 물론이고 최근에 일본의 수영 간판스타가 백혈병에 걸렸다는 소식에 일본 사람들은 여전히 방사능과의 연관성을 가장 먼저 떠올렸지요.

When a well-known celebrity who boasted that he enjoyed eating crops from Fukushima and a Japanese swimming star were both diagnosed with leukemia, it was evident through the news coverage that the Japanese were still concerned with radiation.

They know about it. They deliberately hide it and try to act confident, but their lives are dominated by a fear of radiation… It is said that the Japanese government still does not acknowledge the fact that they have lost their case at the WTO.

그러나… 대통령은 예의로 그랬는지 몰라도 우리는 먹어서 응원할 생각은 없다는 것. 그것은 정치의 영역일 뿐이고 이것은 생존의 영역이기에…
