Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Janelle Monae, Blake Shelton, Pitbull and Charli XCX… sounds like the lineup of an exciting summer music festival, doesn’t it?

These artists are actually part of the star-studded cast for “UglyDolls,” an animated musical film released last Wednesday based on the popular line of plush dolls by the same name.

UglyDolls are usually shapeless, monochromatic blobs with jagged teeth and expressionless faces. But a lot of love and care went into the birth of the first UglyDoll - in fact, it was born out of a love letter.

The toy franchise was created back in 2001, when founders Kim Sun-min and David Horvath, who are now married, were in a long-distance relationship.

After they began dating as students at Parsons School of Design in New York, Kim returned to Korea, while Horvath remained in the United States.

When Horvath drew a funny-looking creature in one of his letters to Kim, she made the character out of fabric and mailed it across the Pacific, hoping to cheer her boyfriend up. Horvath showed the unique creation to his friend and toy store owner in Los Angeles, and in no time, orders for the dolls began piling up.

Dozens of characters from the UglyDolls franchise have since been sold to over 20 countries. Accumulated global sales are now estimated at around $100 million, with 10 million dolls sold in the United States alone.

The hit franchise has earned several famous fans along the way. Sasha Obama, the younger daughter of former U.S. President Barack Obama, was once seen sporting an UglyDolls keychain on her backpack. Wolverine star Hugh Jackman didn’t miss out on the chance to take a photo with the dolls when he visited one of its stores in Insa-dong, central Seoul.

Kim thinks it’s the imperfectness of the dolls that wins over people’s hearts.

“I wanted to send a message about ‘difference’ through UglyDolls,” said Kim in an email interview with the JoongAng Ilbo. “The story of the UglyDolls is the story of accepting other people’s uniqueness and loving yourself despite being different.”

“I am always encouraged and moved when I receive letters from parents who say that their children gained courage from the dolls,” she added. “A lot of people like how all the characters have different personalities that remind them of their friends or family.”

UglyDolls, while sharing a similar cute monster look, are each endowed with a distinct set of personality traits explored in publications like the “Ugly Guide to the Uglyverse” (2008) and namesake comic books.

Babo, for example, is a big goofy-looking UglyDoll who has two bucked teeth and loves eating cookies. In Korean, his name means dumb or stupid.

“I used the name Babo because the word signals something innocent and unspoiled, yet friendly and affectionate,” Kim explained.

Inclusivity and acceptance continue to be major running themes in the “UglyDolls” movie.

The film, directed by Kelly Asbury of “Shrek 2” (2004) and “Gnomeo & Juliet” (2011), follows characters like Moxy, Ox and Ugly Dog in Uglyville, a remote village where all the ugly and rejected dolls who aren’t qualified to be owned by children live. The optimistic Moxy leaves Uglyville in hopes of passing the test that will allow her to be with a child owner, but she faces hurdles along the way as perfectly-proportioned but superficial dolls try to prevent the UglyDolls from succeeding.

In the Korean language version of the film, popular toy reviewer Ellie from the YouTube channel CarrieAndToys voices the character Wedgehead.

“I’m happy to finally show the movie to fans who have waited a long time,” said Kim. “I can’t wait to hear and see the musical scenes and their exciting songs.”

Outside of the “Uglyverse” Kim and Horvath have also tried their hands at making other dolls and characters like “Bossy Bear.” The duo also filled an important void in the industry when they collaborated with Bigshot Toyworks’ Klim Kozinevich to create Yuna, one of very few female Asian-American dolls in North America.
