Samsung auto parts get TUV safety certification

May 14,2019
Samsung Electronics earned a certification from the German testing service provider TUV Rheinland for functional safety in automotive components.

The certification proves Samsung’s automotive semiconductors - such as processors, image sensors, memory and light emitting diodes - satisfy the industry’s safety standards, according to the automaker Monday.

The Korean electronics giant already sells automotive semiconductors, but believes the certification will raise trust in its products, helping to expand its global customer base.

“Samsung has successfully built its management system that will provide semiconductor solutions meeting the functional safety requirements for today’s automakers,” said Manuel Diez, global field manager at TUV Rheinland. “We are pleased to present Samsung with the ISO 26262 certification for automotive semiconductors that will help enhance functional safety within the industry.”

The ISO 26262 certification for automotive functional safety is a standard related to the safety of electrical and electronic systems within a car. It was established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2011 as a global standard to reduce risks from electric or electronic system malfunction in automobiles.

Guidelines specific to new systems like advanced driving assistance systems were added in 2018.

The certification will help the conglomerate expand its influence in the rapidly developing autonomous vehicle market.

“Safety is a top priority, especially when it comes to tomorrow’s automotive vehicles, and our ISO 26262 certification is an exciting step that secures functional safety in Samsung’s advanced automotive semiconductor solutions,” said Kenny Han, vice president of the Device Solutions Division at Samsung Electronics. “We expect that the new ISO 26262 certification will drive momentum for our comprehensive lineup of innovative semiconductor solutions in the automotive market.”
