우버 미스터리
“우버 같은 기업이 국내 모든 모빌리티 데이터를 관장하는 날이 올 수도 있다. ‘타다’와 같은 토종 기업들이 살아남으려면 더 많은 고객을 확보, 더 많은 데이터를 분석하는 데 집중해야 한다.”‘타다’ 서비스를 이끄는 박재욱 VCNC 대표가 지난 2월 중앙일보 인터뷰에서 밝힌 것처럼, 세계 최대 차량공유 업체 우버는 국내 모빌리티 업체들엔 선망의 대상이자, 두려운 경쟁자다. 하지만 차량 공유로 모빌리티분야 뿐 아니라 사회 전체의 모습을 바꿀 것으로 예상했던 우버가 현재 처한 상황은 미래에 관심을 기울이는 모든 이에게 여러모로 생각할 거리를 던진다.
우버는 지난 10일(현지시간) 공모가 45달러에 미국 뉴욕 증시에 상장했다. 상장 당일 하루 동안 7.6%가 빠졌다. 투자자 돈 6억5500만 달러가 하루 사이 허공으로 날아갔다. 로이터가 인용한 미국 플로리다대 제이 리터 교수 집계에 따르면 우버는 이날 ‘미국 IPO 역사상 상장 첫날 주가가 가장 많이 폭락한 기업’이라는 불명예도 얻었다.

미·중 무역분쟁이 심해지는 등 미국 증시를 둘러싼 사정이 안 좋긴 하다. 하지만 그보단 우버의 미래에 대한 확신이 없기 때문이라는 지적이 더 많다. CNNㆍ마켓인사이더 등 외신에 따르면 전문가들이 꼽은 요인은 여러 가지다. ①버는 돈보다 나가는 돈이 훨씬 많다. 지난해 매출의 28%에 달하는 32억 달러를 마케팅에 썼다. ②반면 새 혁신 서비스를 찾기 위한 연구개발(R&D)에 쓴 돈은 지난해 매출의 13%에 그친다. 페이스북이 상장했던 2012년 당시 R&D 비용으로 20%를 쓴 것과 비교된다. ③차량 공유로 쌓은 빅데이터나 고객 풀(pool)을 이용해 어떤 신사업을 할지 비전이 안 보인다.
ITㆍ혁신 기업의 잠재성에 대해 높이 평가하는 편인 미국에선 상장 시점부터 이익을 남겨야 한다는 시장 요구가 상대적으로 낮은 편이다. 하지만 “지금 못 버는 거는 괜찮아. 근데 언제 벌래?”라는 질문에 대한 답을 원하는 투자자에게 우버가 해답을 주지 못하고 있는 점이 문제로 보인다.
우버의 주가는 언제든 다시 오를 수 있다. 14일에도 상장 후 처음으로 7% 상승하기도 했다. 다라 코스로샤히 우버 최고경영자(CEO)도 “아마존ㆍ페이스북도 처음 상장 땐 어려움을 겪었다”는 메시지를 보내 직원들을 다독였다.
그럼에도 우버의 주가 폭락은 혁신의 첨단에 섰던 기업조차 투자자의 신뢰를 한순간에 잃을 수 있다는 점을 알려준다. 투자금을 유치하고, 상장해 시장의 거인이 되고 싶은 국내 스타트업도 새길 만한 포인트다.
