Brazil celebrates Korean Cinema

Celebrating 60th anniversary of Brazil and Korea’s diplomatic relations and 100th anniversary of the birth of Korea Film Industry, Sao Paulo hosted its 6th Brazil Korean Cinema Festival at Cinemateca Brasileira, one of the city’s representative cultural attractions from Thursday in local time.

The festival is scheduled to last until June 9, screening eight signifcant Korean films selected under three categories: Classic, modern, and Independent films. “The Housemaid” (1960) was screened as the opening film due to active recommendations from acclaimed director Martin Scorsese, who said the film was a “must-see.”

At the opening ceremony, actor Lee Eun-shim who starred as the lead role in “The Housemaid” also attended the event and had a guest interview with the audience after screening.

“Never in my dreams did I expect to see ‘The Housemaid’ in Brazil,” the actor said. “I’m so glad to be part of this meaningful event to celebrate the 100th birthday of Korean films.”

Other local films such as “The Great Battle” (2018), “The Throne” (2014), “Rampant” (2018), and “Dongju; The Portrait of a Poet” (2016) is slated to screen at the event.
