Sculpture show kicks off next week

The Plas Contemporary Art Show, an art fair specializing in sculpture and other plastic arts, will kick off its fourth edition next week at Coex in southern Seoul.

Open from June 13 to 16 at the exhibition center in Gangnam District, the art fair will feature around 2,000 works by 800 artists and feature participation by overseas galleries from Canada, China, France, Italy, Taiwan and the United States. The event is organized by Plastic Art Seoul, and is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture.

A 3-meter (9.8-foot) sculpture by Kim Young-won, who is best known for creating the statue of King Sejong at Gwanghwamun, will greet visitors at the entrance of the exhibition. The human body-shaped sculpture will be the first by Kim, 72, to incorporate media or digital art.
The fair will also showcase other large sculptures that are several meters tall, as well as works from Seoul Art Space Jamsil, the only studio in Korea that offers artist-in-residence programs for disabled artists.

Besides Korean artists, visitors will be able to see works by international stars well. Among the works presented at the fair are Damien Hirst’s “Psalm: Coeli Enarrant (Diamond Dust)” (2010) and David Hockney’s “In the Studio, December 2017” (2017).

The show will open to the public from June 13 to 16. Hours are 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and until 5 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are 10,000 won ($8.50) for adults.
