‘Aladdin’ sells over 4 million tickets

Disney’s live-action musical film “Aladdin” reached the four million ticket sales mark on the 19th day of its release, according to data from Korean Film Council on Tuesday.

The film’s box office sales are escalating even at a faster rate than “Bohemian Rhapsody,” another musical film that was immensely popular in local theaters. According to the statistics, it took 25 days for “Bohemian” to break the four million admissions mark. The live-action musical “Beauty and the Beast,” which set a record for Disney’s live-action film sales in Korea, gathered a little over five million local moviegoers by its 18th day.

Moviegoers were especially impressed with new developments to the character of Princess Jasmine, which make her a more strong and independent woman than the original. Some fans have said that the character’s song “Speechless” and the powerful performance from actor Naomi Scott reminded them of Queen Elsa’s signature song “Let It Go” from Disney’s animated film “Frozen” (2014).

Although the flick debuted in second place on its release date, May 23, it quickly rose to the top. Although the current top spot is dominated by “Parasite,” the musical has continued to attract local audiences looking to check out the exciting adventures that Aladdin embarks on after he meets Genie.
