Peace film fest coming in August

The first Pyeongchang International Peace Film Festival (Pipff) will run from Aug. 16 to 20 in Pyeongchang and Gangneung, Gangwon, event organizers announced on Thursday afternoon.

Under the themes of peace, coexistence and prosperity, 51 feature films and 34 short films from 33 countries will screen at the festival.

The opening film will be North Korean director Lim Chang-bum’s “Birds” (1992), which is about a father and a son who are ornithologists who were separated due to the Korean War (1950-53). They get to know of each other’s whereabouts through their research on birds.

“I believe that films contribute much to improving North-South relations,” said festival chairman Moon Sung-geun at a press conference held at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, western Seoul. “We want this event to provide a gateway to flourish communication between the two countries.”

The opening ceremony will be held at the Olympic Stadium in Pyeongchang, Gangwon.
