Local films sell fewest tickets in 11 years

The number of moviegoers seeing local films hit rock bottom in July, recording the lowest number of ticket sales in 11 years, said the Korean Film Council on Wednesday.

According to the release of a monthly report from the organization, only about 3.3 million people visited cinemas to see local films, marking the smallest number since 2008. Compared to June, there was a decrease of 2 million tickets.

This phenomenon is largely due to the premieres of competitive foreign films such as “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and “Lion King,” which caused local film distribution companies to refrain from releasing local films in the same period. Another reason lies in the failure of the highly-anticipated local film “The King’s Letters,” featuring the star-studded cast of Song Kang-ho, Park Hae-il and the late Chun Mi-sun. Since its release on July 24, only 900,000 people have seen the film.

The month’s successful local films, “Exit” and “The Divine Fury,” were released at the very end of the month, which also contributed to the low number of audiences. Meanwhile, foreign films sold over 18 million tickets at the local box office.
