SK Hynix offers new SDD drive for consumer market

SK Hynix started selling a new consumer solid-state drive (SSD), the company said Friday.

SSD is a memory storage device that performs faster than a hard drive. While SSDs are mostly made for corporate data centers, the Gold S31 is made for the mass personal market, for designers, gamers and developers working with heavy programs on a daily basis.

The 2.5-inch drive can read at a speed up to 560 megabytes per second and comes with a five-year warranty. It is currently sold on Amazon in 1 terabyte, 500 gigabyte and 250 gigabyte versions. All key components, including the NAND Flash and DRAM, were designed and produced by SK Hynix.

The Gold S31 is to be rolled out to other North American and European markets starting 2020.

“The launch of Gold S31 with Amazon US will be a meaningful opportunity,” said Kook Won, the company’s head of global sales & marketing strategy.
