The Korea Green Foundation is holding a special art exhibition to raise funds to build a brand new complex dedicated to the environment.

The “I Love Eco” exhibition, which runs at the Insa Art Center in central Seoul from Wednesday until Monday, will feature works about nature by artists and collectors who support the Foundation’s cause to build the Global Eco Campus.

The campus is the Foundation’s ambitious project to construct a three-story brick building plus a separate hanok, traditional Korean home, to host various programs, events and businesses related to the environment. The campus will be home to a cafe and restaurant that will use recyclable products and serve vegetarian dishes, and will open seminar rooms and a concert hall to facilitate environment-related talks, concerts and exhibitions, according to President Choi Yul.

“The Global Eco Campus will nurture future leaders and support start-ups that come up with creative ways to solve ecological issues,” Choi said during a press conference at the Foundation’s office in Jung District, central Seoul, last Tuesday.

Lim Ok-sang, one of the artists participating in the exhibition, voiced his concerns over the many issues plaguing the environment today.

“At this time, I think that the Eco Campus can give a hand in making a change,” he said. Lim’s submission “Be Water” is made of clay and depicts a waterfall.

A host of other well-known artists have also submitted works, including painter Min Joung-ki and the couple that made the famous “Statue of Peace,” Kim Seo-kyung & Kim Eun-sung.

Proceeds from the sales of the 48 works showcased at the “I Love Eco” exhibition will go towards funding the campus construction, which is estimated to cost around 30 billion won ($24.76 million).

The Global Eco Campus is set to open to the public in early 2021 in an neighborhood in Jongno District, central Seoul, that houses several other environment-related organizations. Construction will be headed by architect Seung H-Sang, who will focus on making the building sustainable through the use of solar panels and thermal energy.

To procure the funds, the Foundation will organize fund-raising events and launch donation programs like the ongoing “red brick” campaign, through which donors can have their name and a personal message written on the finished building. Earlier this month, the Foundation also held a benefit concert featuring conductor Gum Nanse.

“If we continue this lifestyle, I’m sure we will cross a bridge from which we cannot return within the next 30 years,” said Choi.

“I believe that the Global Eco Campus will be able to tie government, businesses and civilians together to drive momentum in solving environmental issues.”
