Cultivating smart cosmetics consumers: Makeup review app Hwahae revolutionizes the way shoppers make purchases

Lee Woong [BIRDVIEW]

Korea is often regarded as a test bed for cosmetics brands from all over the world, given the country’s widespread interest in makeup and its intense beauty standards.

Although the tastes of local consumers may be picky, there’s one app that has been downloaded over 7.8 million times that Korean cosmetics enthusiasts can’t live without.

Hwahae, a name taken from the Korean phrase “interpreting cosmetics,” is an app that is helping makeup lovers during each step of their journey. Just by typing in a brand name, users can see a complete list of all the ingredients used to make a product, and be alerted if there any are potentially harmful or allergy-inducing elements included. The app’s analyses and information are reliable and based on criteria set by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and an American cosmetics database from Environmental Working Group (EWG) called Skin Deep.

“In the beginning we were thinking of making an app that recommended make-up just for men,” said CEO Lee Woong of Birdview, the company that operates Hwahae. “Many men find purchasing cosmetics difficult, so we thought it would be helpful to list make-up ingredients like specifications of electronic gadgets.”

But as Lee began digging deeper into the field, he realized that explaining ingredients in a manner that a layperson could understand would be useful for all consumers, not just men.

After months of studying programming and Photoshop, Lee and two other co-founders launched Hwahae in July 2013. Users began multiplying as the Hwahae team spent around 12 hours a day uploading products and their ingredients by hand, but the app developers noticed that users would only stay on the app for less than a minute at a time after quickly searching up ingredients for a product.

Lee and his partners then got the idea to enable product reviews to attract more active users.

Around the time of Hwahae’s launch, makeup reviews were limited to the realm of bloggers, and many of them only wrote positive feedback, having been sponsored by brands to do so. What was missing was a platform where users could discuss a product’s faults as well.

Hwahae went the extra mile and not only began enabling reviews, but made them more informative by displaying the skin type and age range of the reviewer. To encourage participation, Hwahae also required all users to post at least one review of their own in order to access other reviews.

Hwahae operators were aware from the start that there could be brands exploiting their app to upload fake reviews.

“Hwahae’s selling point is that our reviews are natural and honest,” said Lee. “When we first started hosting reviews we checked each and every one in person.”

At first, Hwahae’s staff pored over each review to filter out advertisements before making them visible to other users, but they began noticing a pattern among suspicious reviews. After accumulating enough data, Hwahae was able to design an algorithm to identify fake reviews. Around 2 percent of all product reviews users post on Hwahae today are hidden by the company based on suspicions that they are sponsored.

The latest version of Hwahae goes beyond simply providing information about makeup ingredients and user reviews. It ranks products according to category and target demographic, and even facilitates purchases directly through the app. The app boasts 1.3 million monthly active users and over 4.2 million accumulated reviews.

Lee believes that his focus on staff development played a crucial role in helping Hwahae to get where it is now.

“Although it was my first time running a business I think our company came this far because we continued growing,” Lee explained. “Employee development naturally leads to company growth, so we want to create an environment that helps workers grow.”

Birdview’s 60 or so employees receive a host of benefits that include free meals, subsidized fitness programs and even allowances to spend on makeup. Birdview’s human resources department is called the “growth management team” - a testament to its emphasis on self-development as opposed to employee performance.

Lee still believes there’s much room for Hwahae to grow, as people of all ages and genders show increasingly more interest in cosmetics and rely on their smartphones for information.

“The Korean cosmetics market is around 15 trillion won ($12.3 billion), but Hwahae’s influence is relatively small,” Lee said. “We could potentially triple in size.”

Taking a cue from Amazon, Lee is also planning to open an offline cosmetics store that will offer easy access to product information, addressing the problem of asymmetric information, something that Lee has been concerned with since Hwahae began.

But Lee fears that Korean cosmetics are beginning to face major competition from China and Japan, as K-pop and Korean pop culture lose their novelty and struggle to support the country’s makeup industry.

As Korean brands prepare themselves to be assessed solely on quality, Lee says that Hwahae users will make great contributions to their improvement.

“Every Korean cosmetic product is assessed by Hwahae users,” he said. “Hwahae will help raise the competitiveness [of K-beauty] by fostering picky customers,” whom Lee believes are necessary to building a consumer-centered market that will eventually push brands to develop better products.

“My ultimate dream is to lead the K-beauty market’s growth by creating a virtuous cycle.”
