Truth is the answer (KOR)

The ruling Democratic Party’s effort to rescue Cho Kuk, the embattled justice minister nominee, has reached a strange level, with President Moon Jae-in’s son indirectly urging Cho’s daughter — who is under attack for her seemingly irregular admissions to prestigious schools — to raise her voice against a plethora of hostile allegations. On Facebook Thursday, Moon Joon-yong blamed the public for not “mentioning the efforts she has made on her own.”

It is unprecedented for a son of a president to make public his support for one of his father’s nominations to a top government post. It is yet to be seen if Moon’s son made the comment on Facebook on his own or after consulting with the Blue House. But the act of promoting his father’s decision on social media can be misunderstood as President Moon’s will.

Moon Joon-yong’s logic is not very solid. Despite his compassion and support for Cho’s daughter, she was listed as the first author on a medical research paper during a two-week internship at a medical school and received scholarships for six semesters even though she flunked two semesters at Pusan National University Medical School. Her professor admitted it was excessive.

Ryu Si-min, head of a foundation honoring former President Roh Moo-hyun, also went too far. He vehemently attacked the prosecution’s ongoing investigation of Cho. He accused the opposition Liberty Korea Party of being behind Seoul National University students’ candlelight vigils protesting Cho’s nomination.

President Moon’s Senior Secretary for Political Affairs, Kang Ki-jung, joined the chorus by clicking “like” on a Facebook comment that demanded punishment for Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl for reportedly leaking some details of his investigation of the justice nominee. But it was President Moon who ordered stricter investigations of the powers that be when he nominated Cho as justice minister.

Prosecutors under Yoon’s leadership are expanding the scope of their probe. Not only college students but also medical doctors, legal experts and professors are calling for Cho’s abandoning his nomination. In a recent Gallup Korea poll, 57 percent of the people opposed Cho’s appointment while 27 percent supported it.

The government and ruling party must face reality. To resolve the mounting public outrage, they must help the prosecution get to the bottom of all suspicions. Truth is the answer.

이성 잃은 여권의 '조국 지키기 궤변'즉각 중단하라
여권의 '조국 지키기'가 이성을 잃은 수준으로 치닫고 있다. 마침내 문재인 대통령의 아들 준용씨까지 나섰다. 문 씨는 29일 페이스북을 통해 "(조국 법무부 장관 후보자 딸이) 충분히 훌륭한 성과를 이루며 살아왔는데도 사람들은 노력은 말하지 않는다. 인생을 부정당하는 고통을 겪고 있을 것"이라며 "부당하다고 목소리를 내야 한다"고 했다.
역대 대통령 자식 가운데 아버지의 인사에 공개적으로 입장을 밝힌 이는 준용씨 빼고는 전례를 찾을 수 없다. 준용씨가 청와대와 상의한 끝에 메시지를 낸 것인지, 아니면 홀로 돌출 발언을 한 것인지는 알 수 없다. 그러나 대통령의 아들이 나라의 최대 현안인 '조국 문제'에 대해 자칫 대통령의 뜻으로 읽힐 수 있는 발언을 한 것 자체가 극히 부적절한 처신이다. 문씨가 조 후보 딸을 감싼 논리도 궤변이나 다를 바 없다."실력과 노력이 폄훼됐다"고 주장했는데, 조 후보 딸은 고교 2년생 때 의대 논문의 제1저자로 등재됐고 부산대 의학대학원에서 2번 유급했으면서도 6차례나 장학금을 받는 등 의혹의 상당수가 사실로 확인됐다. 지도 교수도 "지나친 면이 있었다"고 시인하지 않았는가. 객관적 사실마저도 불리하면 마구잡이로 뒤집는 모습에서 진영논리의 광기가 느껴져 섬뜩함을 금할 수 없다면 지나친 표현일까.
노무현 재단 유시민 이사장의 조국 감싸기도 가관이다. 유 이사장은 검찰의 조 후보자 수사를 '저질 스릴러'라고 깎아내리고 서울대 학생들의 '조국 퇴진' 촛불 집회에 대해 "자유한국당 패거리들의 손길이 어른어른하다"고 했다. 학생증이나 졸업증명서를 가진 사람만 참가를 허락할 만큼 집회의 순수성을 지키려 노력한 학생들에게 '아니면 말고' 식 악담을 퍼부은 것이다. 마스크를 쓰고 시위한 학생들을 꼬집어 "왜 얼굴을 가리려 하느냐"고 비난해 '복면 금지법'을 반대해온 기존 입장을 스스로 뒤집은 것도 어처구니없다. 청와대도 가관이다. 강기정 정무수석은 "윤석열 검찰총장을 기밀누설죄로 처벌하라"는 페이스북 글에 '좋아요'를 눌렀다. 문 대통령은 지난 7월 26일 윤 총장을 검찰총장에 임명하면서 "살아 있는 권력도 엄정하게 수사하는 검찰이 되라"고 주문했다. 강 수석은 여권의 이성 잃은 '조국 지키기'에 동참하기 위해 자신이 모시는 대통령의 지시를 대놓고 거스른 셈이나 다름없다.
검찰은 "나라를 어지럽히는 일"이라는 여당의 반발에도 아랑곳없이 수사 범위를 연일 확대하고 있다. 서울대·고려대 등 대학가는 물론 의사·학자·법조인 등 전문가 집단에서도 조 후보자의 퇴진을 촉구하는 목소리가 날로 커지고 있다. 온 여권이 '조국 지키기'를 위해 궤변 총력전에 나선 배경일 것이다. 하지만 그럴수록 상황은 조 후보자와 여권에 불리하게 흘러갈 뿐이다. 당장 여당 소속인 박용진 의원이 29일 방송에서 “유시민이 단 한 번에 검찰, 언론, 대학생을 다 등 돌리게 만들었다. 오버하지 말라"고 직격탄을 날렸다. 박 의원은 지난 21일 민주당 내에서 처음으로 조 후보자의 '결단(사퇴)'을 촉구하고 나선 정치인이다. 그런 그가 8일 만에 소신 발언을 재개한 건 지역구를 비롯한 국민 민심이 심상치 않음을 피부로 느꼈기 때문이라고 한다. 30일 발표된 갤럽 여론조사에 따르면 조 후보자의 장관 임명 반대(57%)가 찬성(27%)을 압도했다. 특히 수도권·20대 및 부산·경남(PK) 등 정권 지지층에서 반대가 찬성의 2배가 넘었다.
여권은 이제라도 이성을 되찾고 현실을 직시해야 한다. 조 후보자에 대한 국민의 의혹과 공분을 해소하는 해법은 막무가내식 감싸기가 아니라, 검찰 수사를 차분히 지켜보며 실체적 진실을 밝히도록 힘을 실어주는 것뿐이다. 정권의 입지를 위해서도 검찰의 공정한 수사는 독약이 아니라 보약이다.
