LG U+ partners with Eulji Foundation to make 5G hospital

LG U+ will work with the Eulji Foundation to build a high-tech hospital running on its 5G network, the mobile carrier announced Tuesday.

According to a memorandum of understanding signed by LG U+ and the foundation, the new hospital, scheduled to open in March 2021 in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, will open up new ways for patients to experience medical services and for staff to work.

LG U+ said it struck the deal on Tuesday to build AI-EMC, a 5G-based artificial intelligence (AI) smart hospital system within the hospital building that is already under construction. The telecommunications firm will take part in designing the hospital space and creating the 5G environment, which is the first such attempt for a hospital, according to the carrier.

The hospital will offer: infrastructure and solutions based on AI to practice precision medicine revolving around patients; Internet of Things (IoT) and location-based solutions for staff to raise efficiency; and 5G services utilizing augmented and virtual reality (VR) to increase convenience for patients and their visitors.

A quarantined patient, for example, will be able to receive a visit in VR. People with difficulty moving will be able to rest in virtual healing spaces. A patient’s room could also be equipped with IoT services that help monitor sleeping patterns and air quality.

The two sides will further develop ways to utilize technologies like AI algorithms, big data, robot services and wearable gadgets with the hope to apply them in the hospital, said LG U+.

“A smart hospital with the adoption of AI platform and digital health care [system] has become a must,” said Park Jun-young, president of the Eulji Foundation.

“We will strive to lead the next-generation medical service and foster 5G specialized industry with the continuous cooperation with Eulji Foundation in the future,” said LG U+ CEO Ha Hyun-hwoi.

Ahead of LG U+, SK Telecom in April signed a memorandum of understanding with the Yonsei University Health System to build a hospital utilizing 5G telecommunications technologies. Scheduled to open in Yongin, Gyeonggi, in February 2020, SK Telecom will primarily provide services based on 5G, AI and IoT.

KT in May unveiled a blockchain-based medical platform that helps patients handle hospital-related tasks like making reservations and payments via smart contract.
