LG, Samsung continue row over QLED classification

The bickering between two local electronics giants over Samsung’s labeling of its QLED TV continued over the weekend. While Samsung Electronics argues the description of its premium TV lineup as QLED has been approved by advertising boards overseas, LG Electronics claims that receiving approval to advertise a product is separate from obtaining approval from the national regulator.

Samsung on Sunday said it has received approval from foreign advertising boards to keep the QLED label for its premium lineup in the United States, Britain and Australia.

LG has been accusing Samsung of falsely promoting the product since the lineup of televisions was launched in 2017. It reported Samsung to the Fair Trade Commission on Sept. 19.

Samsung argues that LG has brought the issue up several times in the past, but has failed to win its stance.

“[Samsung] has already received [approval to label] its products as QLED in key foreign countries, and we are sorry that the issue has resurfaced in Korea years after [it has been settled abroad],” said a spokesperson from Samsung in a statement.

LG on Sunday dismissed Samsung’s explanations and blamed the rival for “clouding the core issue.”

“Receiving approval to add certain statements in advertisements from advertisement boards is different from getting the approval from the Fair Trade Commission,” said a spokesperson for LG.

In 2017, Samsung Electronics labeled its high-end TV lineup as having QLED, or quantum-dot light-emitting diodes, which is a quantum-dot film attached to an LCD screen to enhance the color.

LG Electronics claims that the QLED panel should have quantum dots emitting light on their own without a backlight.

Samsung argued quantum-dot technology includes both photo-luminescent and electro-luminescent quantum dots and that there isn’t a definitive definition that states QLED strictly means electro-luminescent quantum dots that can emit its own light.

LG argued that display industry insiders as well as its rivals acknowledge that QLED refers to quantum-dot light-emitting diode, adding that the Korean Intellectual Property Office defined QLED as the self-emitting display in 2018.
