Chaebol offer aid to Mitag victims

Conglomerates are offering to support victims of Typhoon Mitag, which took the lives of at least nine people in Korea.

The seventh typhoon to hit Korea this year, Mitag slammed the southern part of the country, including Jeju Island and Mokpo, South Jeolla, on Wednesday night. Nine people had died from the typhoon as of 6 p.m. on Thursday, according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.

BGF Retail, which operates the convenience store chain CU, said Thursday it delivered emergency relief supplies like instant noodles and water to victims in Yeongdeok County, North Gyeongsang. The typhoon left vehicles and homes flooded in the area.

“We had prepared the support system and were ready to instantly offer help in case of emergencies from this typhoon,” said a spokesperson from BGF Retail.

Lotte Group on Thursday extended aid to victims from Yeongdeok and Uljin County in North Gyeongsang.

It provided items like water, instant noodles, instant rice and tissues to residents of areas that were evacuated.
