Lee Jung-hyun finally gets to laugh: ‘Love, Again’ is the actor’s first rom-com in her two decade career

Actor and singer Lee Jung-hyun has returned to the big screen with “Love, Again,” her first rom-com since her acting debut in 1996.

The film, released on Oct. 17, tells the hilarious story of the eccentric Sun-young (Lee), who demands an elaborate divorce ceremony with Hyun-woo (Kwon Sang-woo) when he asks for a divorce. Things get a bit complicated when Sun-young finds out that her new love interest Sang-chul (Lee Jong-hyuk) is the childhood friend of her ex-husband, however.

“The scenario doesn’t make sense in real life, who would want to go through a ‘divorce ceremony?’” Lee Jung-hyun said during an interview. “But I understood the situation a bit better when I began understanding Sun-young. I think she actually didn’t want a divorce, and just told Hyun-woo that she’ll agree to it only after a ceremony, not expecting him to actually go through with it.”

Although Lee exuded quirkiness and a cheerful energy in her music career, she’s never starred in a romantic comedy before. In fact, many of the projects she worked on were dark and heavy, including the revenge thriller “Alice in Earnestland” (2014) and her debut film “A Petal” (1996), which addressed the horrific 1980 Gwangju massacre.

“Like anyone else, I had a desire to try out various characters. But because I took on heavy roles, producers continued offering me similar characters. ‘Love, Again’ was a really refreshing opportunity for me. I said I would take it as soon as I read the screenplay.”

Perhaps nervous for her first rom-com, filming got off to a rocky start. But Lee said her colleagues helped ease her through with laughs and jokes.

“In the first scene, I was supposed to have a meal at a beef bone soup restaurant. But I was so tense that my hand that was holding the spoon was shaking. Kwon got really surprised, because the image he had about me from my music was like a techno female warrior. Actually, thanks to funny episodes like that, I could film comfortably.”

“Love, Again” was a special film for Lee in a very personal way as well - as fate would have it, the actor was able to find the man of her dreams while preparing for the film and tied the knot this past April.

“I actually really wanted to get married. But I had given up [searching] as I was getting old and had limited opportunities to meet people. It wasn’t as if I could upload my profile onto an online dating service.”

Lee met her husband of five months on a blind date through a mutual friend.

“I got really lucky,” Lee recalled. “I felt like if it was him, I could comfortably continue my acting career. He’s younger than me, and he was really anxious on the first date - it was cute. As it turned out, he and his father were big fans. They had all my CDs at home.”

As a well-known celebrity, keeping the relationship private before marriage was a difficult challenge. Lee had plenty of unexpected encounters with people who recognized her on her dates, but to her relief, no one pried into the matter and just gave her “a knowing look and gave [her] space.”

Children are definitely in her plans too, partially due to the influence of her “Love, Again” co-stars.

“Kang and Lee would upload pictures of taking their kids to the park, and that made me think that it would be nice to have a family of my own. I liked children before, but seeing Kang and Lee so happy made me want to have kids soon.”

When Lee’s not filming, she spends a lot of time at home engaged in some of her favorite hobbies - cooking and watching food channels. Cooking helps her relieve some stress and concentrate, she says. “If I focus on one thing, bad thoughts tend to go away. That’s why we need hobbies. Also there’s nothing that makes me happier than inviting my close colleagues over, cooking up something tasty and chatting.”

Having just wrapped up filming “The Peninsula,” director Yeon Sang-ho’s upcoming sequel to zombie blockbuster “Train to Busan” (2016), Lee’s now taking some time off and making plans for her next steps.

Releasing a new album is an option, Lee revealed.

Fans have been waiting a long time for Lee’s return. Her last single “V” was released in 2013, and it’s been nine years since her last full-length album. Lee is best remembered as a singer for her groundbreaking electronica hits like “Wa” from 1999, when she dressed up in ancient imperial and extra-terrestrial costumes and put on glamorous shows while popularizing many iconic dance moves.

Lee’s hits and music videos have actually been enjoying a resurgence recently, thanks to the popularity of the so-called Online Tapgol Park, a YouTube channel where broadcaster SBS streams music performances from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Being one of the hottest singers of the time, Lee is a recurring face in the channel.

“My husband and colleagues seem to like it, but I actually find them a bit embarrassing. I’m the only one with wings and murmuring alien languages. I think to myself ‘Why did I do that? I had a lot of energy.’”

“I haven’t retired from the music scene yet. I’m always thinking about [coming back]. I plan on sharing good songs with fans if I have the chance.”

”바들바들 떨었다”…'두번할까요' 이정현, 첫로코 도전기

타고나길 '러블리'하다. 자그마한 체구에서 뿜어져 나오는 에너지가 어마어마해 그 간극의 신선함이 '강렬한 여전사' 이미지를 완성했지만, 원체 사랑스럽기로 유명한 이정현(40)이다. 쌓고 쌓은 본연의 매력을 드디어 첫 로맨틱 코미디 영화에서 후회없이 쏟아냈다.

영화 '두번할까요(박용집 감독)'를 찍으면서 결혼을 희망했고, 실제 결혼에 골인하는 성과(?)까지 거뒀다. 그토록 원했던 첫 로코에 현실 결혼까지, 이정현에게는 어느 때보다 의미있는 한 페이지를 장식한 순간이다. "행운이다"며 베시시 미소짓는 이정현은 행복한 마음을 굳이 감추지 않았다.

특유의 하이텐션은 이정현의 정체성을 단번에 입증시켰고, 신혼의 달달함은 이정현의 한 마디 한 마디에서 시종일관 물씬 풍겼다. 모든 이야기는 기승전결혼, 남편으로 끝나 되려 취재진들의 혀를 내두르게 했다. 그 사이 최근 화제를 모은 '온라인 탑골공원' 속 20년 전 이정현에 대한 소회도 모조리 끄집어낸 시간이다.

-드디어 이정현표 로맨틱코미디를 선보이게 됐다.
"개봉을 너무 안해서 '이러다 못하는 것 아닌가' 내심 불안했다. 현장이 너무 재미있고 즐거웠기 때문에 그 모습이 그대로 담긴 영화를 빨리 관객들에게 보여주고 싶었다. 그래서인지 개봉일이 정해지고 나서 다들 많이 신나했다. 단톡방도 활성화 되고 좋다."

-영화에 대한 만족도는 어떤가.
"솔직히 걱정을 많이 했다. 일반 관객들과 섞여 앉은 자리에서 영화를 처음 봤는데 반응이 자꾸 신경쓰이더라. 생각보다 너무 많이 웃어 주셔서 놀랐다. 야심차게 준비한 신이 끝날 때마다 '다행이다, 재미있나봐' 했다.(웃음) 특히 내 앞에 대학생 분이 앉아 계셨는데 그 분 리액션에 집중하느라 영화를 제대로 못 봤다."

-'이혼식'이 메인 소재다.
"현실에선 말도 안되는 일이다. 하하. 근데 그렇게 말할 수 밖에 없었던 선영부터 이해하니 모든 상황도 같이 이해가 가더라. 선영은 남편 현우와 이혼하고 싶어하지 않는 것 같았다. 이혼하기 싫은데 순전히 자존심 때문에 '이혼하기 싫다'는 말은 못하고 '이혼식 해줘. 그럼 이혼 해줄게'라고 하는 것이다. '설마 하겠어' 했는데 현우가 진짜 이혼식을 진행하면서 모든 상황이 시작됐다."

-이해하기 어렵지는 않았나.
"처음엔 감독님에게 많이 물어봤다. '아무리 코믹 영화지만 누가 이혼식을 하겠어요'라고 했다. 감독님과 많은 이야기를 나누면서 설득 당했고, 진심으로 선영이라는 캐릭터를 받아 들이게 됐다. 판타지가 아닌, 현실 이야기를 담은 영화로 지켜야 할 선은 있겠지만 코믹 장르니까 '그럴 수 있겠다' '이 정도까지는 괜찮겠다'고 생각했다."

-실제 이정현과 닮은 지점도 있나.
"전혀. 완전 반대다. 내가 그렇게 비정상적인 캐릭터는 아니다. 하하. 감정기복이 심하지도 않고, 무엇보다 청소를 되게 잘한다. 진짜 잘한다. 설거지도 꼭 하고 잔다. 선영은 기본적으로 게으르지 않나. 어떤 면에서는 선영이 측은하기도 했다."

-감독은 왜 이정현을 선영으로 캐스팅 했다고 하던가.
"'성실한 나라의 앨리스'를 보면서 선영이 느껴졌다고 하시더라. 나로서는 감사한 일이다. 감독님 덕분에 로코 장르에 발을 들이게 됐다. 시나리오가 좋아서 더 좋았다."

-강렬한 면모도 있지만 러블리한 이미지로 유명하다. 왜 이제야 로코에서 만나게 됐을까.
"그러게. 시나리오가 늘 무겁고 어두운 것만 들어왔다. 그런 것을 하니까 그런 것이 들어오는 무한 반복이었다. 물론 늘 하고 싶은 작품을 택했고, 그것이 잘못 됐다는 것은 아니지만 아무래도 조금은 다른, 신선한 작품을 원했던 것도 사실이다. '두번할까요'가 나에겐 새로운 기회가 됐다."

-권상우가 파트너라는 이야기를 들었을 땐 어땠나.
"너무 재미있을 것 같았다. 나에게는 첫 로코다 보니까 '상대역이 누구일까' 걱정이 됐던 것도 사실이다. 시나리오를 받았을 때 오빠가 캐스팅 됐다는 이야기를 들었고, 상상하면서 읽을 수 있어 더 재미있었다. 오빠가 출연한 '탐정'을 봤기 때문에 더 몰입할 수 있었다."

-첫 촬영은 어떤 신이었나.
"설렁탕 집에서 밥을 먹는 장면이었다. 내가 너무 긴장해 숟가락 든 손을 바들바들 떨었다. 상우오빠가 깜짝 놀라더라. 자기가 생각한 이미지는 테크노 여전사에 강하고 되게 센 이미지였는데, 전혀 다른 모습을 보이니까 신기해 했다.(웃음) 오히려 그런 에피소드 덕택에 더 편안한 분위기가 만들어진 것 같다. 다 내려놓고 임할 수 있었다."

-한강신도 눈에 띄었다.
"물이 얼음장 같았다. 종혁 오빠는 한강에 실제로 빠져서 촬영을 했고, 난 수영장에서 찍었다. CG로 합성한 것이다. 오빠가 고생을 정말 많이 했다. 근데 나 역시 수영장이라 덜 추울까 싶었는데, 산 꼭대기에 위치해 있어 얼어 죽는 줄 알았다.

-뜻하지 않은 고생을 했겠다.
"그래도 내가 여태 했던 작품들 중에서는 제일 고생을 안 했다. '이렇게 편하게 촬영해도 되나' 싶을 정도로 여유로웠다."

-이제 스스로 '로코의 피'가 흐른다고 생각하나.
"으하하. 잘 모르겠다. 난 그냥 주어진 분위기에 맞춰 연기했던 것 같다. 실제로도 감독님의 방향성에 잘 맞춰 움직이려고 노력했다."
