New talent shows potential at short track world cup

Team Korea didn’t see as many gold medals as they hoped but still got to see potential in its young players at the fourth leg of the International Skating Union (ISU) Short Track World Cup in Shanghai on Sunday.

Korea managed to win a total of two gold, three silver and two bronze in China.

On the last day of the event, 19-year-old Lee June-seo finished strong by winning a silver in the men’s 500 meters. This was his second medal of the tournament as Lee previously won his first gold in the men’s 1,500 meters.

Park Ji-won added a bronze in the men’s 1,000 meters and Team Korea also won a bronze in the men’s 5,000-meter relay.

In the women’s 1,000-meter race, Seo Whi-min won silver by finishing her race just behind Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands. The women’s team failed to win a medal in the relay race as they were penalized.

In addition to Seo’s silver, Kim A-lang made quite a return to the national team by wining gold in the women’s 1,500-meter race. She defeated teammate Choi Min-jeong for gold.

This is the first time since February 2015 that Kim has won gold in an individual race at a world cup. Back in 2015, Kim won gold in the women’s 1,000 meters.
