Furniture with history finds fans in Seoul: As interest in home decor continues to grow, people are searching for one-of-a-kind pieces

Increasingly, renovated spaces that show off the building’s history, such as old bathhouses turned into cafes, are becoming popular places to visit, and concurrently there is a growing interest in home goods large and small from decades ago that have their own story as well. Shops selling vintage furniture are popping up around the country and have also become hot spots that offer visitors the opportunity to experience how they can decorate their homes by looking to the past.
In Korea, vintage furniture usually refers to items that are more than 50 years old.
At the moment products made by many European or American designers that were active in the scene from 1940 to 1970, including Finn Juhl, Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Pierre Jeanneret, George Nelson and others, are popular among collectors.
“Vintage is something with over 50 years of history while antiques are items that are over 100 years old,” said the owner of vintage furniture gallery Vint located in Seongsu-dong, eastern Seoul.
“Among furniture pieces, those made in the mid-20th century, which is considered the heyday of the furniture industry, get the most spotlight.”
In Korea, interest in vintage furniture began to grow recently as more people started to focus on decorating their homes, especially with Nordic design items, in the mid-2000s. Many say that vintage furniture provides a unique comfort and charm that they can’t find from brand new home goods.
“Furniture pieces made with modern and practical designs by top-notch designers and expert craftsmen with excellent base materials like rosewood from Brazil are the target of professional collectors,” said Anderson Choi of vintage furniture store Anderson C.
In fact, many consider rare furniture to be a viable investment option. There are many vintage furniture pieces that are commonly up for auction in Britain and the United States. In Korea, Seoul Auction sold a table set by George Nakashima for 145 million won ($125,000) back in 2010.
There are of course options that are more affordable.
“Vintage furniture isn’t artwork that you just look at and appreciate. It is something practical that you can use in your life,” said the owner of vintage furniture shop Collect in Hannan-dong, central Seoul.
“On weekends, we have many people in their 20s and newly married couples coming in to check out the options we have.”
Some shops show customers how to enjoy and take care of vintage furniture. Second Museo, a vintage furniture shop in Jeju decided to conduct an experiment and open a guesthouse space on the second floor of the shop. The place is decorated with vintage furniture, and one group a night got to stay there to enjoy the furniture last summer. Chairs by Danish designer Finn Juhl and by American architect Marcel Breuer and a light by Danish brand Louis Poulsen filled the room.
“The place was decorated with products that are all on sale,” said the owner “I wanted more people to experience the vintage furniture and lights overnight.”
Alcove in Bundang, Gyeonggi, has also set up cultural events at its store. There are painting, embroidery and flower arranging classes provided in a space decorated with vintage furniture, all of which is on sale.
As interest in vintage furniture grows, the market is expanding, and more diverse options are being offered.
Vintage furniture lovers are usually mesmerized by the stories that come with their purchases. Each piece has a story about who designed it and where it comes from. The owner of Vint, who is also a collector, holds a seminar for 10 to 15 people a day to share the untold stories that come with each piece of furniture. The seminars are usually sold out just a few minutes after they open to the public.

거장의 작품에 둘러싸여 하룻밤…젊은층이 빈티지 가구를 즐기는 방법
재생 공간, 노포, 복고 트렌드…. 흔한 새것보다 귀한 헌것에 열광하는 시대다. 가구도 마찬가지다. 시간의 손때가 묻은 가구 한 점은 예술 작품만큼 귀한 대접을 받는다.
요즘 인테리어에 관심 있는 이들이라면 빈티지 가구에 대해 한 번쯤 들어봤을 것이다. 빈티지 가구란 만들어진 지 50년 이상된, 작가(디자이너)를 특정할 수 있고, 작가 생존 당시 생산된 희소가치 있는 가구를 의미한다. 그 중에서도 핀율‧아르네 야콥슨‧한스 베그너‧피에르 잔느레‧조지 넬슨 등 1940~70년대까지 활발하게 활동한 유럽‧미국 디자이너들의 제품이 인기가 많다. 빈티지 가구 갤러리 ‘빈트’를 운영하는 박혜원 대표는 “앤티크는 100년 이상, 빈티지는 50년 이상의 연식이 있는 가구”라며 “그 중에서도 가구 산업의 황금기라 꼽히는 20세기 중반에 만들어진 가구들이 주목받는다”고 말했다.
국내에선 2000년대 중반 이후 북유럽 스타일 인테리어가 유행하면서 빈티지 가구에 대한 선호가 생겼다. 낡았지만 새것에서는 느낄 수 없는 특유의 편안함과 멋스러움이 인기 비결이다. 빈티지 가구점 ‘앤더슨 씨’의 앤더슨 초이 대표는 “당대 최고 디자이너들의 실용적이고 현대적인 디자인, 최고의 수공 기술, 지금보다 훨씬 질이 좋았던 티크와 브라질산 로즈 우드 조합으로 만들어진 가구들은 그 자체로 수집 가치가 있다”고 말했다. 실제로 워낙 희소해 고가에 거래되는 빈티지 가구는 재테크의 수단이 되기도 한다. 영‧미국 등 해외 경매 시장에선 빈티지 가구들이 단골로 등장한다. 국내에서도 2010년 서울 옥션이 조지 나카시마의 테이블 세트를 1억4500만원에 낙찰시킨 바 있다.
경매 시장에서 작품처럼 대접받는 고가 빈티지 가구만 있는 것은 아니다. 몇십만원대로 구할 수 있는 입문용 빈티지 가구부터, 일명 ‘언노운(unknown)’이라 불리는 작자 미상의 빈티지 가구도 있다. 현재도 라이선스 협약을 맺고 재생산되는 일부 제품의 경우는 새 제품보다 누군가 사용했던 빈티지 제품이 더 저렴한 경우도 있다. 과거에는 전문 수집가나 자산가들이 관심을 가졌다면 최근에는 구매자 폭도 훨씬 넓어졌다. 서울 용산구 한남동 빈티지 가구 숍 ‘컬렉트’의 허수돌 대표는 “빈티지 가구는 걸어 두고 감상하는 예술품이 아니라 생활에서 활용할 수 있는 실용품”이라며 “주말이면 20대 젊은 커플이나 신혼부부, 젊은 여성들이 빈티지 가구를 둘러보고 간다”고 말했다.
젊은층도 쉽게 즐길 수 있도록 문턱을 낮춘 빈티지 가구 숍들도 눈에 띈다. 고가인 데다 관련 지식이 없으면 접근하기 어려운 빈티지 가구를 쉽게 즐길 수 있도록 다양한 콘텐츠를 제안하는 곳들이다. 제주 서귀포에 위치한 빈티지 가구 전문점 ‘세컨드 뮤지오’는 지난여름 ‘경험의 집’이라는 이름으로 가구점 2층에 빈티지 가구를 활용한 숙소를 만들고 하루 한 팀만 예약 손님을 받았다. 숙소는 덴마크 디자이너 핀율의 의자, 미국 건축가 마르셀 브로이어의 바실리체어, 덴마크 조명 브랜드 루이스 폴센의 빈티지 조명 등으로 꾸며졌다. 이곳의 김지윤 대표는 “모두 실제 판매하는 제품으로 꾸민 숙소”였다며 “하루 머물며 빈티지 가구와 조명을 직접 경험해보라는 취지로 만든 것”이라고 설명했다. 경기도 성남시 분당구에 위치한 ‘알코브’는 빈티지 가구를 판매하는 숍이지만 그림 그리기‧자수‧꽃꽂이 강좌, 책 함께 읽기 등 문화 행사도 연다. 비정기적으로 열리는 소규모 문화 강좌지만 호응이 꽤 좋은 편이다. 이곳 역시 실제 판매하는 빈티지 가구가 놓인 공간에서 강좌를 진행한다. 과거 빈티지 가구점이 한 편에 카페를 마련해 가구를 만져보고 사용해볼 수 있도록 한 것에서 한 걸음 더 나아간 형태다.
북유럽 디자이너 일색에서 미국‧서유럽 디자이너로 다양해진 빈티지 가구 시장의 외연 확장도 눈에 띈다. 서울 강남구 자곡동의 빈티지 가구점 ‘원오디너리맨션’에서는 요즘 프랑스 디자이너 장 푸르베, 샤를로트 페리앙의 제품을 찾는 손님들이 많다. 30대 중반인 이아영 대표의 심미안으로 발굴한 다양한 빈티지 가구들을 취급하는데 비슷한 연령대의 여성들이 주로 방문한다.
이처럼 빈티지 가구 편집숍의 역할도 커졌다. 단순 판매보다 주 구매자의 취향에 맞는 디자이너 가구를 선별해 들여오고 이를 적극적으로 소개한다. 한남동 빈티지 가구점 ‘컬렉트’는 가구점 바로 옆에 팝업 전시 공간 ‘위클리 캐비닛’을 마련했다. 패션 브랜드나 일러스트 작가와 협업해 빈티지 가구로 할 수 있는 다양한 공간 연출을 보여주는 곳이다. 북유럽 빈티지 가구에 모로칸 러그나 아프리카 소품을 섞는 등 다채롭고 실용적인 스타일을 볼 수 있다. 이곳의 허수돌 대표는 “실제 생활 속에서 빈티지 가구를 어떻게 연출하면 좋을지 보여주고 싶다”고 했다.
빈티지 가구 마니아들은 “가구에 이야기가 담겨 있어 매력적”이라고 말한다. 단순한 가구 한 점이 아니라 어떤 디자이너가 어떤 시기에 누구를 위해 만들었는지, 제각각의 이력이 있다는 얘기다. 서울 성수동의 빈티지 가구점 ‘빈트 갤러리’는 바로 이 점에 주목한다. ‘르코르뷔지에가 질투한 디자이너’‘피에르 잔느레 가구전’ 등의 전시를 기획하고 22년 경력의 수집가인 박혜원 대표가 직접 전시 해설사가 되어 가구에 얽힌 다양한 이야기를 전한다. 하루 10~15명 정도의 소규모 인원만 참석할 수 있는 전시는 오픈 직후 금세 매진되곤 한다.
몸에 걸치는 옷이나 가방만큼이나 내가 머무는 공간이 나의 취향을 반영하는 시대다. 컬렉터나 자산가가 아니면 접근하기 어려웠던 빈티지 가구가 취향 있는 젊은이들의 호기심의 대상이 됐다.
