Moon vows eternal war over real estate

President Moon Jae-in declared war anew on real estate speculation in his New Year’s press conference on Tuesday. He also emphasized his optimism in an economy growing at its slowest pace in a decade.

문재인 대통령이 화요일 신년기자회견에서 부동산 투기와의 전쟁을 선포했다. 문 대통령은 또 십 년 만에 최저 성장을 기록 중인데도 경제 성장에 대해서 낙관적인 전망을 피력했다.
“[The government] will endlessly release more powerful measures [to cool off the real estate market] if the current measures’ effect is thought to have worn off,” Moon said during the press conference held at the Blue House. “I am once again telling you that the government is determined to crack down on real estate speculation and stabilize real estate prices.”

청와대에서 열린 기자회견에서 문 대통령은 “실행중인 부동산 대책의 효과가 사라졌다고 생각되면 정부는 부동산 투기를 잡기 위해 더 강력한 대책을 끊임없이 내놓을 것”이라고 말했다. “정부는 부동산 투기를 단속하고 부동산 가격을 안정시키겠다는 점을 다시 한번 강조하겠습니다.”
In a televised New Year’s address on Jan. 10, Moon said his administration will “never lose in the war against real estate speculation.” “Since the last real estate measure [on Dec. 16], the real estate market has stabilized considerably,” Moon said.

1월10일 TV로 생중계 방송된 신년사에서 문 대통령은 “정부는 부동산 투기와의 전쟁에서 절대 지지 않을 것”이라고 말했다. 문 대통령은 “최근 [12월16일] 부동산 대책을 발표한 이후 부동산 시장이 상당히 안정화했다”고 말했다.
The president said his goal was not merely to prevent housing prices from going up. “Prices in some parts of the country have surged to levels that feel threatening and unacceptable to the lower-income class,” Moon said. “We need to bring down the price before the hike.”

문 대통령은 그의 목표는 단지 주택가격을 상승을 막는 것에 그치지 않을 것이라고 말했다. “어떤 지역의 주택가격은 위협적인 수준으로 올라 저소득층이 수용할 수 없을 지경이 됐다. 가격상승 이전 수준으로 끌어내릴 필요가 있다.”
On Dec. 16, the government surprised the market by announcing its 18th measure to crack down on overheated real estate prices, clearly targeting high-priced apartments in areas of southern Seoul and people who own more than one apartment.

정부는 과열된 부동산 시장을 단속하기 위해 18번째 부동산 대책을 12월16일에 발표해 시장을 놀라게 했다. 12.16 대책은 분명히 서울 강남 지역의 고가 아파트와 다주택 소유자를 겨냥한 정책이었다.
