When the truth sets you free: Director Jang Yu-jeong’s ‘Honest Candidate’ pokes fun at the life of a politician

Ra’s comedic performance is “outside the box,” director Jang Yu-jeong said in a recent interview at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, central Seoul. “At the same time, there’s a side of humanity and maturity [in her acting]. As I developed the character, I realized that no other person could handle this role other than Ra. That’s how the gender changed.”
This is director Jang’s third film after she successfully turned hit musicals into the hit films “Finding Mr. Destiny” (2010) and “The Bros” (2017).
“I heard about [O Candidato Honesto] while I was recording the commentary for ‘The Bros,’” the director said. “I could have made it to fuel anger by shedding light on the realities of local politics and press, but I thought it would be more interesting to turn [the film] into a satire. I was immediately hooked and made the decision [to make the film] in about 10 minutes.”
Like in the original, Joo is one day forced to only tell the truth, due to her grandmother’s prayers for Joo to be an honest person. Unlike the original, however, Joo now has a husband, a son and mother-in-law.
“I wasn’t trying to emphasize that Joo is ‘a female politician,’ but I added details that derived because she is a woman,” Jang said. “When Joo wears a wig, I asked [the designers] to make it in a Hillary Clinton style. I found that a lot of politicians worldwide style their hair that way. The wig is a metaphor that [Joo] is becoming predictable. In the beginning, she really does want to make a difference in the world. But power often quickly spoils those intentions. I wanted to say that [we] need to continue to watch [politicians] closely.”
Other than the main’s character’s gender, the director also adjusted the overall tone of the script to fit the humor of local audiences.
“[People] can only laugh along if they understand the cultural and social context of the story,” Jang said. “That’s why more tragedies than comedies stand the test of time, even among great literary works by people like Shakespeare.”

The scene that Jang took the most care with was when Joo comes face-to-face with a person who is suffering because of her.
“When politicians make a mistake, they often express their regrets in front of the press,” Jang said. “One politician even caused an outrage when they were caught on camera asking, ‘Isn’t this enough?’ In the film, I wanted Joo to meet the victim eye-to-eye and wanted her to truly sympathize with the victim’s pain and make a sincere apology.”
The director shook her head no when asked if it was intentional that the film’s release date was two months before the upcoming national assembly elections in April.
“When we have more to lose, more to protect, we become defensive and lose the value of honesty,” Jang said. “In Korea, there’s a lot of mottos and proverbs about being honest. Although we say that honesty is a virtue, a lot of people say white lies, or exaggerate or exempt things in certain situations. [Through my film], I wanted to ponder over the disappearing value of honesty.”
Although the director started her career through musicals, her original dream was to become a filmmaker.
“I was preparing to debut as a filmmaker in 2003 - I worked at a film company and was working on a script at the time - but that somehow did not turn out well. My talents were shown more quickly through the stage,” Jang admitted. “For people who don’t know this, they see me as someone who changed her career. In some ways, I feel very lonely. Maybe I’ll remain an outsider forever [in the film industry]. I can return to work on the stage whenever I want, but in the movie industry, I still feel like I have to prove myself to show [that I’m worthy enough].”
Jang also had a unique experience while working as the vice director of the opening and closing ceremonies at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. She rehearsed the ceremonies for over a month using about 70 cameras.
“Every morning, the original plans would go haywire, but we had to put on a live broadcast,” Jang said. “But the experience really expanded my perspective. After the Olympics, I was more confident and gained the determination to propel my thoughts forward.”

“라미란 캐스팅하려 원작 주인공 성별도 바꿨어요”
“라미란 배우가 진짜 생각지도 못한 코미디 호흡을 써요. 그러면서도 인간미, 성숙한 면이 있죠. 원래 남자 국회의원이었는데 캐릭터를 만들다 보니 라미란이 아니면 어렵겠다. 그렇게 주인공 성별이 바뀌었죠.”
‘정직한 후보’ 장유정(44) 감독의 말이다. 영화는 정치인과 거짓말의 상관관계를 코믹하게 그린 풍자극. 거짓말을 밥 먹듯 하던 3선 국회의원 주상숙(라미란)은 4선 선거유세 중 갑자기 거짓말을 못 하게 된다는 설정이다.
자신의 창작 뮤지컬 히트작을 스크린에 옮긴 ‘김종욱찾기’ ‘부라더’ 에 이은 장 감독의 세 번째 영화다. 코로나19 속 입소문으로 지난 12일 개봉 이후 나흘째 박스오피스 1위를 지켰다. 개봉 전날 만난 장 감독은 라미란에 대해 “코미디는 말할 것도 없고 현장에서 울리기도 했다”며 “영화 말미 ‘할머니’(나문희)하고 부르는 목소리에 회한, 죄송스러움, 밝으려는 노력까지 다 녹아들어 있었다”고 감탄했다.
원작은 2014년 브라질 동명 영화(원제 ‘O CandidatoHonesto’). 브라질 정치 현실을 꼬집어 그해 자국 흥행 1위에 올랐다. 장 감독은 “(전작)‘부라더’코멘터리 녹음 날 제작사로부터 원작 얘길 들었어요. 정치•언론에 관해 노골적이고 분노를 자아내는 방식으로 만들 수도 있겠지만, 우회적인 풍자도 재밌겠다, 싶어 10분 만에 연출하기로 결정했죠.”
부패 정치인이 할머니의 기도로 거짓말을 못 하게 되는 설정은 원작 그대로다. 그는 “희극은 문화•사회적 코드를 이해해야 웃을 수 있다. 셰익스피어도 희극보다 비극이 더 많이 남아있는 게 그런 이유”라며 한국적 특징에 맞게 각색한 이유를 밝혔다.
-주인공이 남성에서 여성이 됐는데.
“남편, 아들, 시댁이 생겼다. ‘여성 정치인’이라 의식하진 않았지만, 여성이기에 있을 법한 디테일을 찾아냈다. 주상숙 머리는 가발 할 때 힐러리 클린턴 스타일로 해달라고 했다. 전 세계적으로 정치인들이 그런 스타일을 많이 하더라. 일종의 빤해진다, 전형적으로 변해가는 것의 상징이었다. 주상숙도 처음엔 진심이었다. 권력은 사람을 금방 변질시킨다. 지속해서 지켜봐야 한다고 말하고 싶었다.”
-주상숙은 ‘진실의 입’을 갖게 된 후 유세현장, 시어머니 앞 할 것 없이 솔직 발언을 마구 투척한다. 극 중 그의 위기를 호재로 탈바꿈시키는 선거 유세 묘사도 절묘하다.
장 감독이 실제 보궐선거 기간 현장을 밀착 취재했다. 당시 유세현장이 그에겐 “마치 축제 같았다”고 한다. 선거관리위원회•국회의원•정치부 기자 등에 자문하고, ‘팩트체크’팀을 둬 리얼리티를 챙겼다. 주상숙의 보좌관 역 배우 김무열은 선친이 오랫동안 보좌관으로 일한 게 영화 선택에 큰 이유가 됐다.
가장 공들여 찍은 장면은 주상숙이 자신의 과오로 고통받은 피해자와 마주하는 순간. 장 감독은 “정치인들이 실수할 때 기자들 앞에서 유감을 많이 표명하는데 어떤 위정자는 ‘이 정도면 됐나’ 이런 말까지 방송에 담겨 공분을 사잖냐”며 그런 만큼 “주상숙이 피해자를 인간 대 인간으로 만나 고통을 통감하고 진정 고개 숙여 사과하는 장면을 짧게라도 진지하게 찍고 싶었다”고 했다. 개봉 시기가 총선 두 달여 앞으로 잡힌 것은 우연이라고 했다.
“잃을 것, 지켜야 할 것이 많아지면 장벽을 치고 방어적이 되고 정직의 가치를 잃잖아요.” 장 감독은 “한국엔 ‘정직하라, 거짓말하지 말라’는 가훈•급훈이 많다. 정직이 미덕이라지만, 나이 들면 기분 좋아지라고 하는 가벼운 거짓말, 조금 과장하고 편집한 말들을 평범한 사람들도 많이 한다”며 “사라져가는 정직의 가치를 너무 무겁지 않게 생각해보고자 했다”고 말했다.
그가 뮤지컬을 원작으로 삼지 않은 첫 영화다. 장 감독은 무대와 영화의 매력을 “무대는 전체를 다 본다면, 영화는 만들어진 앵글에서 보이는 것을 극대화할 수 있다는 것”이라 꼽았다.
영화 데뷔작 ‘김종욱찾기’ 이후 10년이 흐른 지금까지 ‘무대 출신’이란 꼬리표가 붙는 데 대해선 “솔직히 굉장히 외롭다”고 털어놨다. “어쩌면 영원히 아웃사이더라고 생각해요. 무대는 일하고 싶을 때 언제든 일할 수 있었지만, 여기(영화)는 아직 제 그릇이 부족해 녹록한 게 없고 뭔가 지속해서 증명해야 하고요. 피로감, 허탈감 같은 게 있죠.”
그는 “2003년부터 영화사에 들어가 시나리오를 쓰고 감독 준비도 했는데 잘 안 됐다. 공연에서 두각을 더 빨리 나타냈다”면서 “이런 얘기를 (사람들은) 잘 모르니 내가 ‘이동한 사람’이 됐다. 복잡한 얘기”라고 했다. 그러면서 “공연계에서 제 작품이 아직 올라가고 있고 영화 기회도 주어졌다”며 현재에 만족한다고 했다.
그는 평창동계올림픽 개•폐회식 부감독을 맡아 2년 반 일했다. 최신기술 방송 카메라 약 70대가 동원된 리허설만 한 달 넘게 했다. “한꺼번에 카메라 수십 대가 돌아다니고, 아침마다 (콘티가) 뒤집히고, 바로바로 생방송을 하니까 한 번에 볼 수 있는 시야도 확장됐다”고 돌이켰다.
“영화감독 그 이상 인간 장유정으로서, 예술가, 협상가로서 대단한 분들과 큰 경험을 했죠. 영화 촬영 도중 카메라 움직임을 바꾸는 게 조심스러웠는데, 올림픽을 겪으며 확신이 들고 추진력도 갖게 됐어요.”
