LS Cable & System wins an $85 million cable deal
LS Cable & System won an $85 million submarine cable deal, the company announced Tuesday. The project involves a 25-kilometer (16-mile) submarine cable between the Bahrain main island and Hawar Islands.
Establishing power cables underwater was a decision made in order to preserve the island’s ecosystem instead of building a power plant there, LS explained. It’s part of the environment-friendly project pushed forward by the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The order was placed by Al Gihaz, an engineering, procurement and construction company based in Saudi Arabia. LS will take charge of supplying equipment and construction. The project is due for completion in September 2021.
LS won the bid over competitors from Europe and Japan, the company said. Its prior experience in long-distance submarine projects, including the 105-kilometer line connecting Korea’s Jeju and Jindo islands, a 100-kilometer project in Qatar and a 35-kilometer project in the United States, worked in its advantage.
“As the power grid is closely related to national security and social unrest due to blackouts, economic thinking alone will not determine suppliers,” said Myung Roe-hyun, President and CEO. “LS C&S is capitalizing on its products and construction competency to expand its advance overseas and increasing domestic investments as well.”
