Sohn Ji-chang's Mother-In-law Wins $9.4 million in Las Vegas

With one lucky pull on a Las Vegas slot machine, the mother-in-law of Korean acting couple Sohn Ji-chang(30) and wife Oh Yun-soo(29) found herself the winner of $9.4 million. According to the family, Kim Min-jung (54) had been playing the 'Wheel of Fortune' slot machine when she suddenly found herself inundated by $9.4 million at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas around 2:30 a.m. on June 17. The prize is the biggest amount ever paid out for a slot machine.

On the lucky day, Kim and her daughter had been playing at the game for about 20 minutes. After placing six dollars into the machine and pulling the slot machine, bells started ringing and an alarmed Kim was told that she had just won a great deal of money. The prize is to be paid out over 20 years annually, and Kim received a first payment of $474,379 at the casino.

When asked how they would be spending the windfall, Sohn Ji-chang said the family would discuss how to put the money to good use with some of the proceeds going to charity.

As a South Korean resident, Kim has to report these winnings as income, but has until May of next year to declare the amount. The estimated total amount of tax levied against Kim's 9.4 million is an estimated $3.4 million.
